'I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas', was sung by an 11-year-old girl, Gayla Peevey, who according to legend, was a regional child star of the Oklahoma City area. This 1953 hit was recorded as a fund-raiser to bring the city zoo a hippo. When released nationally by Columbia Records the song shot to the top of the charts, and the city zoo got a baby hippo named Matilda! This is the first Christmas song I remember hearing on a little plastic record player I had as a kid, I was 7.

In 1957 the group formed when Dion DiMucci joined The Belmonts - Carlo Mastrangelo, Freddie Milano, and Angelo D'Aleo - in late 1957. In 1958 they recorded 'I Wonder Why', which made it to #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and Dion and The Belmonts appeared for the first time on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. This success won Dion and the Belmonts their first major tour in late 1958, with The Coasters, Buddy Holly and Bobby Darin. This was followed up by the 'Winter Dance Party' tour with Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. On February 2, 1959, after playing at Clear Lake, Ohio, Dion decided that he couldn't afford the $36 cost of a flight to the next show. The plane crashed, Buddy Holly and the other stars were killed. Even after that time the hits kept coming for the group. In 2004, Dion gave a live performance at the Tropicana in Atlantic City with Dion (lead vocals, electric and acoustic guitars) Butch Barbella (keyboards, backing vocals), Louie Colleti (backing vocals), Jamie "King" Cotton (sax, percussion, backing vocals), Al Korosy (lead guitar), and Charlie Powers (drums, vocals.) Though this performance wasn't with the Belmonts, Dion sounded just like we remember him after 47 years! He's keeping R&R and Doo-Wop alive!

In 1969, after several years without a major hit, Brook Benton signed to a new record label, Cotillion Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. Brought to the attention of producer Jerry Wexler, Benton recorded this song. Taken from his come-back album, 'Brook Benton Today', the melancholy song became an instant hit. In the spring of 1970, it topped the Billboard Magazine Black Singles chart. It also reached #4 on the Pop Singles and #2 on the Adult Contemporary charts, respectively. It was also #498 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. This performance was taped live in 1982.

What a beautiful tribute to a daughter. "My Little Girl" is a single by country music singer Tim McGraw that reached the top three on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The song was also featured on the 2006 movie, Flicka. It was nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics Association for Best Song in 2006. It is also the first single that Tim co-wrote.

This kids show ran for years in the UK. Based on the book by Elisabeth Beresford these furry long nosed creatures recycled rubbish left behind by us untidy humans.
Mike Batt provided the music and at the time kept some of the biggest bands in the world from the top spot on the charts here. All the voices for the characters were provided by Bernard Cribbens, a well known British actor of the time.

I love this song by Daniel Bedingfield. For anyone who recognizes his last name, he's the brother of pop singer Natasha Bedingfield. He and Natasha share the Guinness World Record for being the first and only siblings to have had solo number-ones in UK chart history.

Marc Bolan And T-Rex. Always in the Charts during the Glam rock era. His songs still carry over from that time and pop up in the most unexpected places, like in the movies or ads for this or that. Yes I was a fan !

(OOps, I deleted by accident the first time!)This Pointer Sisters video of 'Jump' was released prior to the 1984 Summer Olympic games, and included footage of athletes competing in track and field events. The song was the second of four Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles in a row for the sisters in 1984, and peaked at #3 in July. It also appeared on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart and reached the Top 10 in the UK, peaking at #6. The song netted the group a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1985
