Mystery Matinee - Game 81 (Answered) There was a time this week when I thought I’d never play a game with you again. We all know that it is a good thing to do for some of you. I was really sad about the passing of my friend Jack. His involvement here was something that kept me involved. The game is, after all, born out of Jack’s creative mind. A good guy. These days, I am just trying to encompass whatever I can recall. I feel lucky to do it here in another manner than Jack’s. Occasionally, I notice that those that play are what I like to call “the intellectuals”. That would be, in regards to how you discover the answers with demonstrating to me that you are smarter than I thought. You are making this Thanksgiving season so much better for me by playing. And keeping the preservation of my enthusiasm continuing til next time. Thanks! UPDATED: ANSWERED!!! *E*

December 1978: California Suite - Commercial Preview The 17th of December from that year. Do you remember that? How many recall four stories wrapped-up into one? I do. And you? A group of guests have something in common. They've all travelled to a certain vacation spot. Though, it will get kinda unexpectedly zany after a short while on their seemingly perfect stay to a vacation hotel. Like comedies and sight-gags? Well, this is it. Is it for you? Specifically, I really enjoyed the performers. My initial reaction was on Christmas Day then. I recognized them all easily. Just to sit and see how incessantly a shot play can become a part of me, all thanks to Simon. A guy that I would embrace if I had a chance. The variety of people are primarily there to make sure this doesn't become a bad mess, which tends to happen without good timing and bad directions. But in this case, it never happened, due to the fact of cool personalities with a real sense of fun and humor. Staying at a hotel never looked like this? How did they all get along? *E*

Supertramp: Take The Long Way Home (1979) One of the most known memories for many from that era was from the United Kingdom. It was never mistaken at being what it is. Memorable. This was thanks to a group of brass instruments and a piano at times. We all knew them. Did you know they had a very uncool name to themselves. True. Long before settling on what we all know today. Funny enough, they really weren't deemed at being big in that period, compared to other parts of the world. Only in the United Kingdom and Canada where they garnered a bigger response. Still, I remember them commonly on the radio then. Remember the those summer months of '79? Together, they had actually started out in the the later half of the 1960s, getting cash backed-up from a Dutchman they knew. He was their hope at the time. They even played around with their name too. Eventually settling on a what we know today. Actually, they were inspired by a book of someone very famous from years prior. Ever heard of William Henry Davies? He took away the cheesy name they almost settled on. About the recognized melody, it was actually thought of before the members had agreed to partner-up together with Roger. He had been much younger when he put it down for himself. Actually, more than ten years prior to what was eventually brought out. From the mid 70's, the men, they became more and more stronger as a unit together, especially with the sounds of a harpsichord mixed with a clarinet and the cool trombone. It set them apart from others at the time, providing them with what they really wanted. Can you think of any other now that you could compare them with? Together, they were individuals, who in numerous ways would be remembered for something that would become tirelessly great. Fact, there was a time when they couldn't be productive at all. You could laugh now, as in the Eighties, they were seriously known as being well-known around the world. Genuinely cool. It started with Crime of the Century, brought to us in 09/74. It could be said, they could've been overwhelmed by the explosion of hype around them. Luckily, this did not happen. How many do remember that? You? This wasn't disposable nonsense. They were inventive. But so were many others were at the time. They even brought themselves over to America to live in the country that eventually recognized them. It sounded too good to be true. They had made it. *E*

1964: Fly Me to the Moon: Frank Sinatra and Count Basie Did you know when it comes to a standard, I can't forget it. Just like you. Do you know about Bart Howard? A long-time writer from the past. It was his idea that really gave him a lift then. Especially in a few cabarets where it was basically heard at first. I don't think I have ever been to one of those places. Have you? Mister Howard eventually saw that things eventually changed with his composition being a success for himself. It lasted for years. Do you know that the man had an entire list of titles (49) that broke things open for him. This is what happens when you know how to get exposure with a lot of luck and efforts. Easier then (perhaps?) Originally, it was first heard way back in '54 in NYC. That must've been a fun time to be there. We know that. A lot of brilliant ideas were being signed with those you may know. Since then, it has become known across the country. The writer, he had chosen his words carefully, as it was once called "In Other Words". Did you know that Bart, he was getting his name across with his seperate works to the right people. Within a short time, the '54 number was redone by Frank in the seventh year of that decade. This was a time when Frank was getting a new start, revamping himself, as he was fallin' out from the rest who were rising over him, on a whole different level when compared to him. He just wasn't fitting in with trends, and was in danger of losing it all as others were more modern and "with it". In no time though, he accomplished a new rise with winning a golden man for a flick he was seen in at the time. Know it? Of course, things were not always good behind the doors. It's just the way things are for those who do that sort of thing. Now, he was rediscovered by more than women, all thanks to a lot of great chances to prove himself again. Show after show really did it for him. Remember? By the way, when it comes to the ambitious tune, people were really paying attention, as it was their second go together at it. It did well for both, especially with widening their social circle with close-ties along their way. The sparks were flying then for both with their careers on the move. It couldn't be avoided as both were eager with their creative efforts. They were then sure bets, and both hard to avoid with catching ears with a slew of invites around the world. They enjoyed each other too well, and could be seen together over the years doing significant work that hardened their partnership. On Basie, he was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, and is best remembered for the banner influential work he set in our culture throughout his lifetime. *E*

1974: Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Jackie Blue In the 4th year of the 1970's came something cool. So cool, that nowadays it would make you feel young again. Recall it? Sure. It had a long shelf life for those who understood them then. It could've been different though. It could of been very subjective to what it really was talking about. These days, it sure doesn't belong to a dance club for seniors or a cheering section in an arena. No, not at all. Campuses in the 1970's was more like it. How did you come about it? Easy answer. And for these reasons, it has lasted and lasted. It was off their 2nd effort then. Placed and organized in a specialized trucking unit built for getting the sounds all-down for us. You get the picture, right? So, after a few switches on the questionable original message, the strange friend in the story being said, now represented something very different. It was now a sensible change to the loss of what was 1st unfolded on paper. Becoming more than a tale of sadness due to a depiction of bad,bad stuff. Man, such a difference it makes, just for it to be heard again. I really dig 'em. What about you? It went to the third spot on the chart a year later, as people came to recognize them more and more from it. I love stick man Larry Lee restoring our happiness for then at this time. Unfortunately, I don't dig things associated with drugs. Nothing. But a good quality message came out of it. We all like that. It had an excellent flow. This is why it lasts. It really is that simple. It made such good sense. About their early times, they 1st joined together in '72, over in Springfield, Missouri. They looked quite extreme for back then, as their name was perfect, but their long stringy hair was something that made them stood out from the rest. Really? Most people could not get enough of their unique spectrum sized range of beautiful sounds. An increasing number of people still positively respond to them still thanks to their early beginnings. Did you know that they remain to this day in another form from then. They sure haven't left yet. Catch them around the summertime in person. *E*

Strawberry Letter Number 23: The Brothers Johnson (1977) Remember what was happening in the year stated? Sure you do. Now, don't get me wrong on it, I know it is long ago. Ever had a conversation about it? Did you know that it was really inspired from a fruit-scented note that had been written for someone close to the original reclusive writer/instrument player. True. Who was he, the writer? Heard of him? Well, it was a guy named Shuggie Otis. For years, I had been previously unaware of the fact until a New Year's Eve conversation about the string player. As the story goes, he had no idea that by the time it was redone and finished, it would be as big as his own modest self. Down the five years, it worked out just fine for him. But, it really could of launched his budding career. His fortunes could of changed for himself for much of his life. But, Otis did seem content with it. Even though, as I said, he could never of anticipated it. It was just a love letter that spawned it. A relationship that went from one to another. All in all, it was particularly useful for him in the long run of things, as he was just a teenager when he put down his own feelings about it to a girl. He must of realized soon enough that he could draw a lot from it($). I bet, to his surprise, he had became the winning element when the original was reworked into something cooler by a few top-people who cleverly knew that were on to something. Resulting into something that fared better than the 1st try that he had made in the early '70s. Seems that the writer (Otis) had a female cousin, and because of this, one of the brothers came across the vinyl effort by accident by dating her. This is how a 2nd chance can come back around with a little more of an effort with a new idea added, and not being obliged to be faithful to the 1st source. There was a lot of accompaniment on the 2nd try. Do you know who was on it? It was a different sound altogether. Due to this, it made its way into our lives because of those involved. Even today, look no further, it is immensely enjoyable still. On the brothers, Louis and George, their association with Mister Jones was a welcomed chance to get them known around the world, thanks to his cousin. And now with particularly heading to Japan, QJ gave them the consistency that others would beg for then. As years went on, they experimented with other genres that would separate them all from their earlier days, especially with such things as church music. However, they would really not repeat back what they had done previously. Only choosing to go another way. By the late eighties, they had left due to more contemporary trends that were appearing. *E*

Shadow Dancing: Andy Gibb (1978) Once again, it's showtime! Who could forget, the affection former Manchester gent had gained then. It was just as equally great as his older siblings. It was unfortunate though, he had passed on at exactly 30 years of age. Bad timing. There was a lot of talk on why and so sudden. Remember when? Like all, we expect to spend a lifetime with him. But it was not to be. How do I incorporate a great life of travel for the Manchester-born performer? Well, as a child, he was relocated nearby Brisbane, Australia, which changed the course of his life. His days included being placed in the city of Sydney. But by the late 1960's, he decided to fly over to Britain with the rest of his family to seek a more appealing life of success with his brothers and close sister. He wanted to be creative and expressive like his other three bros. You could call this a cash move for the whole family. It seemed then, the family were making the right move for the boys. As he grew into his teen years, he set himself up on the Island of Ibiza (Spain) doing the tourist entertainment circuit, and then, after some time, he went over on the Isle of Man, found close to Britain and Ireland. In 1974, Barry asked him to return to Australia. He listened, and hastily packed, most obviously to take action to make it big. Often times, this is how you solve a problem, by taking your strong impulse and moving on with it. Back then, he was orienting himself with endlessly being connected with his brothers calling. As life suddenly became complex for him in 1976 Australia, he decided to take the significant step to go to Florida with them. It had become difficult to deal with his wife in Australia. He wasn't receptive to know that she was with baby. It wasn't his! That would of finished most, but he carried on in America. In the late part of '76, brother Barry was ready to guide his baby brother in the right direction. Everything felt better when both experienced a top-charted disc (#1) that his brother famously wrote for him, as he was too skilled at it, just like his other siblings were. The next year he saw a wave of success by the brothers that included himself this time. Do I really need to say that it was partly thanks to a white suit and a flashing-lit disco floor found in NYC. That accomplishment made them all feel like a million bucks. But it was even much more for them. At one point, Andy outsold all others with his brothers help. That is a strong family unit, just so long as you are happy. In April of '78, things took off for Andy. He achieved his hearts desire with a wave of numerous vinyl hits that followed more and more. Well, not that it made much of a difference, but Andy emerged just as popular as his family members. He had become as important. We are aware that Barry had a hand in it. Everyone shared together with the '78 hit. A great bond. Two years had passed, when things would crack with inadequate feelings. Time spent with his gal would become broken suddenly. How many recall Victoria P.? He had to choose from becoming an ongoing concern during the course of their known relationship. He ultimately suffered with losing her. He was too much in a daze then with her. Things were becoming strained with that. It wasn't good. So with various projects still being sent his way, he became more and more difficult in social situations on and off in the public. He did try and try by conquering his problems in '84. He was the top performer at a major festival in Chile, with performing two nights back to back. He also held a two-week engagement at San Fran's Fairmont Hotel in 03 of '86 thanks to his talents. His streak of ones was slowing though, even when he was given great opportunities. But he had a difficult time overcoming his now gone girlfriend. He couldn't move forward in a personal way. So he just fell into the distance of his private world of drugs and behavior issues. And absenteeism was causing heartbreak and agony, all caused by binges of that white junk we know of. Basically, it wasn't pretty. Much sadness followed quickly with him isolating himself from others due to that. All in all, he did achieve more by becoming the guy who would never disappear from us, despite the consequences that messed his life up. He had a total wave of 11 no. ones that came right on time in his life. Never forgotten. *E*

Zebra: Tell Me What You Want (1983) How many can remember when 3 dudes from Louisiana were suddenly the next "big thing"? Well now, that would've been way back when things were changing drastically with hairstyles and clothes. They, like all, were "one" grouped together as those that could be heard from 1 mile away, that is, when played correctly. Sure, many more elicited similar reactions, but at that particular moment, everything was right for them. But like most or some who vaguely sounded similar to them, it only lasted for a decade or less, this was when things changed for the worse for those alike them. But instead of packing it in, Zebra continued on. Not surprisingly, most of the guys were heavily inspired by a London-based group you may of heard before: Robert, two John's and Jimmy's blues-inspired sounds. They were the four who could take credit for it and so many more. So with the 3 Americans, it just wasn't another composition with its entirety worded about a lady or ladies. Or was it? Now that I think about it, this certainly applied with their own take on how they saw things. Also, it does certainly capture that unique time perfectly. Thankfully, they still manage to carry on with much more than their counterparts from that time. A matter-of-fact, they actually found their beginnings way before, away in '75. This was when things started to turn, as they got their own identity to work on. *E*
