First Barbie Doll The Barbie doll was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel), whose own daughter was called Barbara. Barbie was introduced to the world at the American Toy Fair in New York City. The doll was intended to be a teenage fashion doll. There has been some controversy over Barbie's figure when it realized that if Barbie was a real person her measurements would be an impossible 36-18-38. The Ken doll was named after Ruth's son. Barbie first had bendable legs in 1965.

Our Miss Brooks Opening October 3,1952 to May 11,1956. The trials and tribulations of Connie Brooks, the wisecracking English teacher at Madison High School. Stories revolved around her romantic misadventures as she struggled to impress fellow teacher Philip Boynton (Robert Rockwell and played on the radio show by Jeff Chandler), the biology instructor; and her continual clash with crusty, blustery Osgood P. Conklin (Gale Gordon), the principal. Connie rented a room from kindly old Mrs. Davis and rode to school each morning with one of her students, the dimwitted Walter Denton (Richard Crenna). This was a great show. My daughter, who collects old radio shows, has an entire set of these and they had me in stitches every night!

Suzan Ball - - - Lucys Cousin Sultry Suzan Ball, a distant cousin of Lucille Ball, was a starlet in the early 1950s under contract to Universal. While filming East of Sumatra (1953; with Jeff Chandler), Ball injured her right leg, which was later found to be cancerous. Her leg was eventually amputated below the knee. By 1955, the cancer had spread to her lungs, and she passed away in August 1955 at the age of 22. Ball married actor Richard Long in 1954, leaving him a widower just a year later.

Mike Tyson SI Cover There was once a time when Mike Tyson was a positive force for boxing. He was six months shy of his 20th birthday when he first appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1986 billed as 'Kid Dynamite.' Tyson's story made good copy: He was a tough kid from the projects who was more or less adopted by boxing guru Cus D'Amato and turned into a champion with frightening power. D'Amato also instilled in Tyson a love of boxing history--a rare commodity among modern pugilists. D'Amato died not long afterwards. So did another one of Tyson's handlers, Jim Jacobs. Tyson wed actress Robin Givens, but the marriage was a disaster. Things spiralled downward from that point...
