The first and most famous version was hosted by Groucho Marx, with the unflappable announcer and assistant George Fenneman. The show debuted on radio in 1947, then made the transition to TV. The television version was changed very little from the radio version. It was filmed before a studio audience, then slightly edited for television broadcast. In 1960 it was renamed The Groucho Show and ran another year. This pilot was made for CBS. You can see stagehands adjusting the microphones during the broadcast. Groucho himself doesn't bother to dress up for his debut!
Recorded on December 5, 1949.

This film was notable for Groucho Marx's classic rendition of "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." Many people say that "At the Circus" is one of the Marx Brothers' lesser movies, but personally I think it's very funny, as exemplified by this scene, and Groucho's scene with Eve Arden later in the movie, to say nothing of his classic moments with Margaret Dumont, which, like all of his scenes with her, are surefire.

Groucho Marx sings two songs in Horse Feathers (1932): I'm Against It and I Always Get My Man. I've always thought the first song was terrific. (I tend to sing it myself whenever I see a politician or an activist on TV espousing a cause with which I disagree.)
