Four British Kings in One Photo This 1908 photograph is remarkable: Pictured are four British kings! On the far right is Edward VII, the reigning monarch at the time. At the far left is his his son, who would become George V in 1910. The two boys in the middle are Edward's grandsons who themselves would both become kings. The future Edward VIII is at the back. His brother, the future George VI, stands in front of him. The photo was taken by Queen Alexandra (the wife of Edward VII). It was published in a Christmas collection that was sold for charity.

Viktor Tikhonov - USSR Hockey Coach One of the most familiar faces of Soviet Union hockey was the dour puss of coach Viktor Tikhonov who ran the Central Red Army club team and the Soviet National team with an iron fist and almost unchecked success for 20 years. Tikhonov was born on June 4, 1930. As a player, Tikhonov was a defenceman with the Soviet Air Force and Dynamo Moscow clubs, but he wasn't well known internationally until he became the head coach of both the Central Red Army team and the Soviet Union's national team in 1977. At one point Red Army won 13 consecutive Soviet Elite League titles--which isn't all that surprising considering Tikhonov had the authority of a Red Army general and could immediately draft any player into the armed forces if he showed promise. The USSR won eight IIHF world titles under Tikhonov plus Olympic gold medals in 1984, 1988 and 1992. The USSR's national team also won the 1979 Challenge Cup and 1981 Canada Cup. Tikhonov had power over his players' lives and used it to control every aspect of his team. They routinely trained together for 50 weeks per year while living in army barracks. Canadian hockey great Phil Esposito said the so-called Soviet "amateurs" were more professional than NHL players. Humorless and ruthless, Tikhonov was known for his dictatorial coaching style. He exercised control over his players' lives. His expected absolute obedience--or else. His players quietly called him "the last Stalinist." With tongue-in-cheek humor, western media often referred to Tikhonov as "Chuckles." Tikhonov constantly feared his players would defect if they ever got the slightest chance. Anyone he merely suspected of defecting would be left off teams planning to travel outside the Iron Curtain. In 1991, for instance, he cut Pavel Bure, Valeri Zelepukin, Evgeny Davydov, and Vladimir Konstantinov just before the 1991 Canada Cup. All of them had been drafted by NHL teams, and Tikhonov suspected they were flight risks. Even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Tikhonov stayed on as the national team coach of Russia for a few more years, but the newer players rebelled against his harsh authoritarian ways. Tikhonov mellowed slighty before going into retirement in 1996. After his retirement, Tikhonov lobbied the Russian government for more attention and better financing for the national team. His grandson plays on the current Russian national squad. Tikhonov died in November 2014.

Son of the Late Dana Plato Commits Suicide Almost exactly 11 years later, Plato's son, Tyler Lambert, committed suicide at the age of 25. According to Richardson, her grandson, a cameraman and amateur songwriter, had long struggled with his mother's premature death at age 36. Plato died of a prescription pill overdose on May 8, 1999. It was around the time of Mother's Day, Richardson notes, making the anniversary that much harder.

122-Year-Old Jeanne Calment - Oldest Person Ever Jeanne Louise Calment (21 February 1875 – 4 August 1997) was a French woman who had the longest confirmed human lifespan in history: 122 years and 164 days. She resided in Arles, France for her entire life. Calment outlived both her daughter and grandson. She entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1988 as the world's oldest living person. On October 17, 1995 she became the oldest person ever, having surpassed the highly disputed case of Shigechiyo Izumi of Japan. Calment became the last living documented person to have been born in the 1870s when the Japanese super-centenarian Tane Ikai (born 1879) died on July 12, 1995, and was thence more than five years older than any other living human being until her death more than two years later. She outlived no fewer than 329 undisputedly verified super-centenarians. (A super-centenarian is a person who has attained 110 years.) Calment's lifespan has been thoroughly documented by scientific study, with more records having been produced to verify her age than for any other case. She is the only person confirmed to have reached 120 years of age. Calment came to prominence at age 113 in 1988 during a local observance of the hundredth anniversary of artist Vincent van Gogh's 1888 visit to Arles. The 13-year-old Calment had briefly met Van Gogh at her uncle's store where the Dutch painter had gone to buy art supplies. Calment unflatteringly remembered the famed artist as being ugly, unfriendly and rude! The photo below shows Calment celebrating her 121st birthday in 1996.

Robert E Lee Citizenship Restored - 1975 When General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to General U.S. Grant on April 9, 1865 to effectively end the Civil War, one of the terms of surrender was that Confederate soldiers would have their U.S. citizenships automatically restored. When Andrew Johnson became president following Abraham Lincoln's assassination, he changed the rules slightly. Fourteen special cases had to apply directly to the President to have their citizenships restored. One such case was Robert E. Lee. Lee wrote to President Johnson on June 13, saying in part: "Being excluded from the provisions of amnesty & pardon contained in the proclamation of the 29th Ulto; I hereby apply for the benefits, & full restoration of all rights & privileges extended to those included in its terms. I graduated at the Mil. Academy at West Point in June 1829. Resigned from the U.S. Army April '61. Was a General in the Confederate Army, & included in the surrender of the Army of N. Va. 9 April '65." Consequently, Lee was provided with an Amnesty Oath form, which he filled out, dated October 2, 1865--the same day he was sworn in as president of Washington College in Lexington, VA–-and sent the signed document to the nation's capital. Lee's application was received by Secretary of State William Seward who had no intention of following through with Lee's request. Lee died in 1870 without really knowing his citizenship status. A century passed. In 1970 Lee's application was found by chance by a National Archives clerk who was looking through old State Department files. Since Lee had made the proper application to restore his citizenship, there was no reason to deny it. After Congress made Lee's old application something of a special cause, President Gerald Ford formally restored Lee's citizenship at a ceremony at his former mansion in Arlington, VA on August 5, 1975. Among those on hand for the occasion was Lee's great-great-grandson R.E. Lee V.
