Marty Robbins Sings El Paso One of the great legends of country music was Marty Robbins. His musical accomplishments include the first Grammy Award ever awarded for a country song, for his 1959 hit and signature song "El Paso", taken from his album Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs. "El Paso" was also the first song to hit #1 on the pop chart in the 1960s. He won the Grammy Award for the Best Country & Western Recording 1961, for his follow-up album More Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, and was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1970, for "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife." Robbins was named "Artist of the Decade" (1960-69) by the Academy of Country Music, was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982, and was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998 for his song "El Paso". Robbins was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975. For his contribution to the recording industry, Robbins has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6666 Hollywood Blvd.

Ben E King Stand By Me In 1960, a singer named Ben Nelson left the Drifters after failing to gain a salary increase and what he felt to be a fairer share of the group's royalties. He then assumed the more memorable stage name Ben E. King in preparation for a solo career. Remaining on Atlantic Records, King scored his first solo hit with the stylish, Latin-tinged ballad "Spanish Harlem" (1961). "Stand by Me" was his next recording. Written by King along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, "Stand by Me" was voted one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" were named as two of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and were both also given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 1986, Stand By Me was re-issued following its use as the theme music to the movie of the same name. This video was made in the late 80's, with Ben E King and two of the stars of the film, River Phoenix and Will Wheaton.

Nat King Cole Sings The Christmas Song This song was written in 1944 by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells. The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded it in 1946. At Cole's request, and over the objections of his label, Capitol Records, a second recording was made the same year using a small string section, this version became a huge hit on both the pop and R&B charts. Cole re-recorded the song in 1953 and again in 1961, using the same arrangement with a full orchestra. Mel Tormé himself eventually recorded his own version in 1965. However, the 1961 recording by Cole is generally regarded as definitive and continues to receive considerable radio airplay each holiday season. Cole's version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974.

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell AINT NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH IN 1967, this original version of "Ain't No Mountain", was a care-free, danceable, and romantic love song that became the signature duet between Gaye and Terrell. Its success led to a string of more duets including 'You're All I Need to Get By' and 'Your Precious Love'. Even though Diana Ross recorded it again three years later, the Gaye/Terrell version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and is regarded today as one of the most important records ever released by Motown.

Bo Diddley Passes May 2nd 2008 Bo Diddley, a founding father of rock 'n' roll whose distinctive "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians, died Monday after months of ill health. He was 79. Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., spokeswoman Susan Clary said. He had suffered a heart attack in August, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa. Doctors said the stroke affected his ability to speak, and he had returned to Florida to continue rehabilitation. The legendary singer and performer, known for his homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat, was an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and received a lifetime achievement award in 1999 at the Grammy Awards. In recent years he also played for the elder President Bush and President Clinton. Diddley appreciated the honors he received, "but it didn't put no figures in my checkbook."
