Only one episode of Hogan's Heroes was ever shot in black-and-white: the pilot episode. Here is the introduction. You'll note a few changes from the later introductions. The pilot episode had a Russian character in it and Sergeant Carter was absent. Once the series began in earnest, the Russian character was ditched and replaced by Larry Hovis' Sgt. Carter. (Hovis had appeared in the pilot episode as a guest character.) This move actually better reflected reality. Russians captured by the Germans were not treated nearly as well as those from other Allied countries. There would have been no Russians in a Luftstalag.

History's greatest act of tit-for-tat: When the French Army surrendered to Nazi Germany in June 1940 during the Second World War, the Germans forced the French to sign the documents of surrender in Marshal Foch's railroad car--the very place where the Germans had been forced to sign the Armistice on November 11, 1918 that ended the First World War.

At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, American Shirley Babashoff was supposed to be the female version of Mark Spitz. Babashoff was a threat to win six gold medals. Instead, she won just one gold medal and four silvers. In every race she lost, she lost to an East German. The star of the East German women's swimming team was Kornelia Ender (pictured here). Babashoff was immediately suspicious of the East Germans because of their muscular builds and deep voices. She claimed the dressing room 'sounded like a coed room.' At the time, Babashoff was criticized as a sore loser. The press dubbed her 'Surly Shirley.' After East Germany collapsed in 1989 the truth came out: East German athletes were regularly given steroids via injections to increase their athletic capabilities. Babashoff now campaigns to have the East German medal results nullified.

The Greatest Mass Rape in History
One of this century's greatest crimes, and probably one of the greatest crimes against women in history, was the mass rape of the conquered women of Europe in 1945. The rapists were mainly Red Army soldiers, some of them non-White troops from the Far East and Central Asian Republics of the Soviet Union.
As the Red Army advanced toward her in 1945, the city of Berlin had become a city virtually without men. Out of a civilian population of 2,700,000, 2,000,000 were women.
Former Soviet war correspondent Natalya Gesse recalled: "The Russian soldiers were raping every German female from eight to 80... It was an army of rapists."
The rape victims were not just Germans. Polish women also suffered. So did young Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian women who had been sent back to Germany by the Wehrmacht for slave labor.
As Author Antony Beevor put it,
"If anything, the events of 1945 reveal how thin the veneer of civilization can be when there is little fear of retribution."
