Whats My Line Esoterica Regulars on this website know that I love this old show. (My 300-plus WML posts attest to this!) The original CBS version of What's My Line aired Sunday nights at 10:30 from February 2, 1950 to September 3, 1967. I was just three years old when it went off the air so I never saw WML during its glory days (although I frequently watched the syndicated 1968-75 version). To make up for what I missed, I've been reading everything I can about this great slice of Americana. In the comment section below, I'll be listing some esoteric facts--trivia, if you like--about this supremely classy game show. By the way, this is a publicity photo of the WML gang from 1955.

Death of Carl Alfalfa Switzer This is the grave marker of Carl Switzer, better known to fans of the Our Gang comedies as Alfalfa. Switzer died on January 21, 1959 under strange circumstances. After his acting career wound down, Switzer became a professional dog breeder who had many clients in Hollywood. (Jimmy Stewart, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were among them.) The 31-year-old Switzer was shot in the groin when an argument over an alleged $50 debt with acquaintance Moses Stiltz turned violent. He bled to death. The official police account of the incident claims that Stiltz shot a drunken Switzer in an act of self-defense. Switzer had supposedly threatened the gunman's life while brandishing a knife. Latter day researchers have cast doubts on the accuracy of the official police report. Nevertheless, a coroner ruled Switzer's death to be justifiable homicide and the case was quickly closed. Switzer's passing received little publicity in the newspapers because famed movie director Cecil B. De Mille died that very same day.

Chubby - Our Gang In 1929 Norman (Chubbby) Chaney replaced Joe Cobb as the resident fat boy in the popular Hal Roach-produced Our Gang comedies when they went from silents to talkies. Chaney was supposed to be 11 years old at the time, but later research revealed he was actually born in 1914 rather than 1918. (The 1920 Baltimore census lists him as a six-year-old.) Chaney made 19 Our Gang shorts through 1931 after which his contract was not renewed. He never acted again. Suffering from a glandular condition, Chaney never grew beyond 4'11". His weight ballooned to over 300 pounds. In 1935 he underwent a corrective surgical procedure which decreased his weight to less than 140 pounds. His health was severely affected, though. Chaney died from myocarditis in 1936 at the age of 21. For 76 years Chaney was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave in a Baltimore cemetery--until fans raised $4000 for a granite headstone in 2012.
