The New Treasure Hunt - 1974 Clip The New Treasure Hunt was a 1974-1977 syndicated remake of a 1956-1959 game show. The orginal show had a quiz segment. The 1970s version did not. Hosted by Geoff Edwards, it offered a fantastic grand prize of $25,000 to a contest who was lucky enough to choose the right box out of 30--and have the nerve to stick with it. Total Television describes the program as "slow moving and cruelly suspenseful." In this short clip from a 1974 episode, a contestant thinks she has made a bad bargain until Geoff surprises her.

Redskins Lose Romeny To Win The Washington Redskins lost their home game against the Carolina Panthers today by the score of 21-13. The Redskins moved to Washington in 1937. Since then, there have been 18 presidential elections. In 17 of those, the following rule applied: If the Redskins win their last home game before the election, the party that won the previous election wins the next election. If the Redskins lose, the challenging party's candidate wins.

Egad! Slovakia Beats Bulgaria 82-0 The ultimate beatdown! Here are selected highlights of the first few minutes of a European qualifying game for the 2010 Winter Olympics in which the Slovakian women's hockey team pounded Bulgaria 82-0! At the time there were only about 30 female hockey players in all of Bulgaria. They had played no games in preparation for the tournament. Earlier in the three-team tourney, Latvia had beaten Bulgaria 39-0. To put things in perspective, Canada beat Slovakia 18-0 in the Vancouver Olympic tournament.

1975 Rose Bowl Here are edited portions of Southern Cal's game-winning drive against Ohio State in the 1975 Rose Bowl game. Ohio State was leading 17-10 late in the game. After an Ohio State field goal, Southern Cal drove the ball 84 yards for a touchdown, gambled on a two-point conversion, made it, and held on for a dramatic 18-17 win. I fondly recall this game as it was the first Rose Bowl I ever watched.

Bob Baun - Broken Leg Goal A sports classic: It's April 23, 1964; Game #6 of the 1964 Stanley Cup finals. The Detroit Red Wings lead the Toronto Maple Leafs three games to two and are looking to clinch the Cup at the Detroit Olympia. During the third period, Toronto defenceman Bobby Baun crumples to the ice and has to be taken to the Leafs' dressing room on a stretcher. He's done for the night, right? Nope! Believing he only has a pinched nerve in his leg, Baun returns in time for the overtime period--and scores the winning goal! A post-game medical examination reveals that Baun had broken his leg. (Two nights later, Baun plays in the deciding seventh game too and leads Toronto to a 4-0 win and the Stanley Cup.)

Bill Cullen Secret Disability The affable Bill Cullen is largely considered one of the greatest TV game show hosts ever. (One poll lists him as THE greatest.) Witty and charming, Cullen was a fixture as a game show host and as a regular panelist on I've Got a Secret for years. One source claims he earned $300,000 in 1958--an extraordinary sum for that era. During his impressive broadcasting career which spanned from radio sports commentary in 1942 to his umpteenth TV game show gig in 1986, Cullen hid an obvious physical disability: As a toddler in 1921 he had been stricken by polio. As a teen he was further crippled in a motorcycle mishap. The end result was that Cullen had severe mobility issues until the day he died. As was the norm at the time, the TV networks did their best to hide Cullen's disability as a kindness to him. Every game show he hosted he was never shown walking to his place; he was always already seated behind a podium and stayed that way for the show's duration. On July 9, 1961 he was a mystery guest on the original What's My Line. Usually the WML mystery guest would be shown signing in and then walking a few feet to sit beside host John Daly. When Cullen entered, the camera focused on the blindfolded panelists until he was seated--which must have puzzled millions of viewers that night. Mel Brooks related a horribly awkward story about a time he appeared on the Cullen-hosted game show Eye Guess in the late 1960s. At the end of the tapings, Brooks walked toward Cullen's desk to thank him for having him on. Cullen walked towards Brooks with his arms flailing and his feet turned over at the ankles. Brooks thought Cullen was doing a deliberately comical walk, so Brooks mimicked it! Brooks was aghast when someone shouted that Cullen was disabled. Cullen, however, laughed loudly and told Brooks he was glad someone finally had the courage to poke fun at him. Cullen said he always felt self-conscious about the special treatment he received. Cullen also suffered through pancreatic surgery in the late 1960s. He was never as robust looking afterwards. A lifelong smoker, Cullen succumbed to lung cancer in 1990 at age 70.

Peter Puck - Episode 1 Peter Puck was a Hanna-Barbera Production that appeared on hockey telecasts in Canada (on Hockey Night in Canada) and on NBC's Sunday telecasts in 1974. The likable animated rubber disk was used to educate neophytes to hockey about the game's rules. (Why this was necessary in Canada is anybody's guess!) Ronnie Schell provided Peter's voice. Here's the first of nine episodes that were made.
