Oct 22nd Happy 65th Birthday Annette Annette Funicello reminisces about her singing career and how the "Annette" sound was created. She announced in 1992 that she suffers from multiple sclerosis. She had kept her condition a secret for many years, but felt it necessary to go public to combat false rumors that her impaired carriage was the result of alcoholism. That same year, she was inducted as a Disney Legend. In 1993, she opened the Annette Funicello Fund for Neurological Disorders at the California Community Foundation. She is truly a beautiful and courageous lady, who will always be loved and admired by all of us.

President Gerald Ford Gets Swine Flu Shot On April I5, 1976, Congress passed Public Law 94-266, which provided $135 million of taxpayers' funds to pay for a national swine flu inoculation campaign; that's $348,491,686 in 2009 money. Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion (1976 dollars) had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the swine flu vaccine. Makers of the drug were given guarantees from the government to be immune from side-effect lawsuits.

Brady Kids Sing Time To Change This is from a 1972 episode of The Brady Bunch titled Dough Re Mi. You've probably seen it a dozen times: Greg writes a surefire hit song (We Can Make The World A Whole Lot Brighter) and cajoles the other five Brady kids to chip in to buy time at a recording studio. But, oh no, puberty sets in and Peter's voice starts to change! It looks like the Brady kids will have to forfeit their non-refundable $150, but Greg saves the day by writing Time To Change--a song that features Peter's cracking voice.

Babe Ruth in Fancy Curves In 1932 Babe Ruth appeared in a series of short films designed to teach baseball fundamentals and promote the sport. In Fancy Curves, the Babe teaches the finer points of the game to a group of sorority sisters. I'm sure the Babe enjoyed the female companionship of the babes.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas 'I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas', was sung by an 11-year-old girl, Gayla Peevey, who according to legend, was a regional child star of the Oklahoma City area. This 1953 hit was recorded as a fund-raiser to bring the city zoo a hippo. When released nationally by Columbia Records the song shot to the top of the charts, and the city zoo got a baby hippo named Matilda! This is the first Christmas song I remember hearing on a little plastic record player I had as a kid, I was 7.

How the internet saved Russia from the hardliners This is from Google, see the link http://www.google.com/help/netneutrality_letter.html The Internet as we know it is facing a serious threat. There's a debate heating up in Washington, DC on something called net neutrality and it's a debate that's so important Google is asking you to get involved. We're asking you to take action to protect Internet freedom. In the next few days, the House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill that would fundamentally alter the Internet. That bill, and one that may come up for a key vote in the Senate in the next few weeks, would give the big phone and cable companies the power to pick and choose what you will be able to see and do on the Internet. Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies, who control almost all Internet access, want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest. They want to build a two-tiered system and block the on-ramps for those who can't pay. Creativity, innovation and a free and open marketplace are all at stake in this fight. Please call your representative (202-224-3121) and let your voice be heard. Thanks for your time, your concern and your support. Eric Schmidt-Google

The Burns and Allen Shows First Commercial Back in the 1950's, commercials were often written into the stories of the shows. Technically, you could say that the opening credits were THE first commercial, since it did say "Carnation evaporated milk is proud to present..." However, the sponsors often owned the shows, and the company name was generally thought to be part of the serie's name. For instance, The Colgate Comedy Hour. In this clip, Gracie is talking to a tax assessor who can't seem to get her to understand that taxes fund the government, as well as social services (police, fire fighters, etc). The commercial part is very brief here, so pay attention or you'll miss it.
