FDR Assassination Attempt 1933 In February 1933, less than three weeks before being sworn in as the chief executive of the United States, president-elect Franklin Roosevelt survived an assassination attempt in Miami. Unfortunately, Chicago's mayor Anton Cernak, was struck by a shot intended for Roosevelt. He died of his wounds. The assassin said he didn't personally dislike Roosevelt. He just hated all rich people.

We Missed Allan Melvin Passing aka Sam The Butcher Some how we missed Allan Melvin's passing back in January. A character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84. Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years. The jowly, jovial Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on "All in the Family," and Sgt. Bilko's right-hand man Cpl. Henshaw on the "Phil Silvers Show." But his place in pop culture will be fixed as butcher and bowler Sam Franklin, the love interest of Brady family maid Alice Nelson, who was played by Ann B. Davis. Melvin played the role from 1970 to 1973. Born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1923, Melvin grew up in New York and attended Columbia University. He was appearing on Broadway in "Stalag 17" when he began his decades-long television career with "The Phil Silvers Show," playing a role his wife said was always his favorite. "He was proudest of that show," Amalia Melvin said. "I think the camaraderie of all those guys made it such a pleasant way to work. They were so relaxed." He saw steady employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name. His other credits include several guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gomer Pyle: USMC," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Rich Little on Dean Martin Celebrity Roast for Frank Sinatra Dean Martin was one of America's greatest legends in the entertainment industry. He is sorely missed even to this day. He honors or roasts his beloved friend and American icon, Frank Sinatra, in one of his many roasts. In my opinion, even the half-hour infomercial is far more entertaining than anything on television today. I miss people like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and so many others. There are more people who are gone than living with us like Don Rickles, Peter Falk, and Ruth Buzzi. Frank Sinatra's roast is pretty relaxed from what we know. We're glad to see celebrities cut loose and be themselves and poke fun at this man. Nobody will ever have the roasts that Dean ever put together in Las Vegas. Of course, people were smoking cigarettes (God forbid that you display any smoking on television anymore) and drinking liquor and being human anymore. Those days are gone forever and now you have a bit of history with these episodes. Even though they drank and smoked, they always appeared to be having fun at themselves.

The Twelve Chairs Gorgeous Frank Langella (from Dracula 1979) starred in one of Mel Brooks earlier films. The story goes something like this: An aging ex-nobleman of the Czarist regime has finally adjusted to life under the commissars in Russia. He and the local priest find that the family jewels were hidden in a chair, one of a set of twelve, so they return separately to Moscow to find the hidden fortune. We rented this film because it was the only Mel Brooks movie I hadn't seen. Since I'm a rabid Brooks fan I thought, 'Why not see them all?' It was great!!

Scream Queen Hazel Court Dies at 82 Hazel Court, an English actress who co-starred with the likes of Boris Karloff and Vincent Price in popular horror movies of the 1950s and '60s, has died. She was 82. Court died early Tuesday of a heart attack at her home near Lake Tahoe, daughter Sally Walsh said Wednesday. While she had a substantial acting career both in England and on American TV, Court was perhaps best known for her work in such films as 1963's "The Raven." She co-starred with Price, Karloff and Peter Lorre in director Roger Corman's take on the classic Edgar Allan Poe poem. Corman directed her in five movies. Like other "scream queens" of the era, Court often relied on her cleavage and her ability to shriek in fear and die horrible deaths for her roles. "The Premature Burial,""The Masque of the Red Death,""The Curse of Frankenstein" and "Devil Girl from Mars" helped propel her to cult status and brought her fan mail even in her later years. 'She'd probably get over 100 pieces of fan mail a month and she would reply to every single one,' her daughter said. Court had finished an autobiography, "Hazel Court - Horror Queen," which will be published in Britain.

Ava Gardner on Whats My Line Beautiful Ava Gardner makes her first ever television appearance as a mystery challenger on What's My Line on September 13, 1953. (Watch for Arlene Francis' potentially embarassing question about Ava's marriage. Ava was married to Frank Sinatra at the time. Their wedlock was volatile.)
