1982 - Showbiz Broad Don't be fooled with what you see. Do you remember this time? Madame's Place was packaged a bit different than others. Remember seeing Madame on Hollywood Squares? How about Solid Gold? There was also a program entitled "Keep on Truckin'", which was on for just a short time, too. She is best known for Madame's Place, a show of shows that aired from August 1982 to February of the folllowing year. The nitty grity about it all was that its creativity was all shown in a syndicated format. The puppeteer was non other than Wayland Flowers, who had began his career in the sixties on various broadcastings. True, there was only one of him, but his legacy carries on with new comedy with Madame about town on entertainment stages with a new pupeteer named Joe Kovacs. *E*

Orphan Trains The Orphan Train was a social experiment that transported children from crowded coastal cities of the United States to the country's Midwest for adoption. The orphan trains ran between 1854 and 1929, relocating an estimated 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children. At the time the orphan train movement began, it was estimated that 30,000 vagrant children were living on the streets of New York City. Two charity institutions, The Children's Aid Society (established by Charles Loring Brace) and The New York Foundling Hospital, determined to help these children. The two institutions developed a program that placed homeless city children into homes throughout the country. The children were transported to their new homes on trains which were eventually labeled 'orphan trains.' This period of mass relocation of children in the United States is widely recognized as the beginning of documented foster care in America. Two future governors (John Green Brady of Alaska and Andrew Burke of North Dakota) were orphan train passengers.

North American Soccer League The North American Soccer League was supposed to be the 'next big thing' in sports. It lasted 17 seasons but it failed to dislodge the traditional team sports from their longtime perch as fan favorites. The league began in 1968 with the merger of two small pro leagues and lasted until 1984. At the peak of the NASL's popularity in the late 1970s, it had 24 teams. The New York Cosmos (who featured Pele and Franz Beckenbauer on their roster) sometimes drew 70,000 fans to Giants Stadium. However, the league average never exceeded 15,000 fans per game and some teams struggled to draw 5,000. By its last season, the NASL had dwindled to nine teams. By the time the final NASL game was played between the Chicago Sting and Toronto Blizzard, only three teams were solvent. To Europeans, the NASL was perceived as soccer's version of an elephants' graveyard where players long past their primes could extend their careers for sizable money. The Euro stars, despite their diminishing skills, accounted for large chunks of teams' payrolls that could have been better spent fostering North American talent. Traditionalists were also put off by the NASL's gimmicks to Americanize the sport: a liberalized offside rule, game clocks that counted downward instead of upward, penalty shootouts to break ties, and a crazy points system that rewarded goals scored as well as wins. In the end, the NASL managed to alienate traditional soccer fans while failing to attract new ones.

Lets Keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn When stories started to circulate in 1957 that the Brooklyn Dodgers were going to relocate to Los Angeles, this Phil Foster song was released to plead the case of the Brooklynites. It didn't work.

Bare-Faced Goalie Harry Lumley Struck by Puck From an April 7, 1959 Stanley Cup playoff game between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Garden: Bruins' goalie Harry Lumley is struck in the face with a rising backhand shot from Dick Duff. Two of Lumley's teeth are knocked out and a gash is opened around Lumley's mouth that required seven stitches to close. Lumley continues to play for about half a minute until the puck is frozen before seeking medical attention. (Lumley's face must have been a gory sight; check out the horrified female spectator near the Boston bench covering her eyes!) Lumley returned to finish the game. Men were men back then! Foster Hewitt provides the commentary.
