Howard Cosell picks Foreman to beat Ali Like most boxing fans, Howard Cosell figured 32-year-old Muhammad Ali had no chance to regain the world heavyweight title whe he stepped into the ring to face 25-year-old George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. (Ali won by an eighth-round knockout.) In 1964 Cosell picked Sonny Liston to beat Ali (then Cassius Clay) in one round. Clay won the title that night when Liston failed to come out for the seventh round.

Norton survives one round against the heavy-hitting champ but he does not get through round two. Listen for Muhammad Ali shouting instructions to Norton. Clearly, Ali preferred facing Norton rather than Foreman.

George Foreman SI Cover Heavyweight champion George Foreman has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated seven times. This was his first time, June 18, 1973, when he was a surly fearsome fighter--not the warm and cuddly George he was during his remarkable comeback years.

Gil Clancy 1922-2011 Sports fans lost a familiar voice and friend on March 31, 2011 when Hall-of-Fame boxing figure Gil Clancy died. As manager and trainer of Emile Griffith, he was best known for his significant contributions to the former world welterweight and middleweight champ's career. Born Gilbert Thomas Clancy, he served with the US Army during World War II, and fought as an amateur while stationed in Mississippi. After the war, he attended New York University from where he attained his bachelor's and master's degrees in Education. While teaching in New York City, he began training boxers and shaped Emile Griffith from a Golden Gloves champion into a professional world champion in two different weight classes. Clancy was acknowledged as one of the most respected trainers of his time, as he worked with Jerry Quarry, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali and Oscar De La Hoya, among many others. He was named Boxing Writers Association of America Manager of the Year twice (1967 and 1973). During the 1980s, he worked as a boxing commentator with CBS Sports and HBO; he was recipient of the Sam Taub Award in 1983. Clancy was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1993.

Boxer Ron Lyle 1941-2011 Former heavyweight contender Ron Lyle died on November 26, 2011 as a result of complications from stomach surgery. He was 70. Lyle spent more than seven years in a Colorado prison for his part in a 1961 gang murder. He took up boxing while incarcerated. Lyle, paroled in 1969, did not have his first pro fight until 1971 when he was 30. He compiled an excellent 43-7-1 professional record, but his two most famous fights were losses. Lyle was stopped by Muhammad Ali in a May 16, 1975 world title fight in Las Vegas. Lyle was leading on the judges' scorecards when the fight was stopped, somewhat controversially by the standards of the day, in the 11th round. On January 24, 1976, Lyle engaged in a memorable crossroads fight versus George Foreman, also in Las Vegas. It was a wild, nationally televised brawl that featured both men in trouble several times. Each man was knocked down twice. Foreman eventually prevailed by a fifth-round knockout. Boxing historian Bert Sugar claimed it was "the most two-sided fight" he had hever seen.
