Theme Building LAX This is the famous "Theme Building" at the Los Angeles International Airport. This restaurant was designed in the early 1960's, when L.A. was still new and hope for the future abounded. Everyone thought the future would be just like "The Jetsons". The building was recently refurbished, and now the interior is intentionally retro-60's.

Final Whats My Line John Daly Mystery Guest The original classic Sunday night version of What's My Line ended its run of more than 17 years and 876 shows on September 3, 1967. Everyone figured the final mystery guest would be a biggie. Some newspapers even speculated it would be President Lyndon Johnson. (Hence, Arlene Francis' question about being 'voted into office.') Instead host John Daly was himself the mystery guest! Quite a fitting conclusion, I'd say!

Happy Days cast on Mike Douglas Show I love this clip! On September 14, 1974, Ron Howard, Donnie Most, Anson Williams, and Henry Winkler appeared on The Mike Douglas Show to discuss the success of their popular sitcom Happy Days. The show had debuted in January 1974 as a mid-season replacement and struck a chord with viewers. Very soon it would hit the top of the ratings and stay there for three years. Look at how young everyone is!

BARRY MANILOW Even Now Allright, everyone get your booing and hissing out, this is MY memory. I have loved this man's music since the 70's, and still do, even through his recent hip replacement. I guess we'll grow old together, with Barry singing and me sighing to his music.

Boston Marathon Cheater Rosie Ruiz On April 21, 1980 unheralded Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line in the prestigious Boston Marathon. Her apparent victory in record time was immediately suspicious. First, everyone assumed Jacqueline Gareau was the leading female. Nobody saw Gareau lose the lead in the race at anytime after the eighth mile. Furthermore, Ruiz's running shoes were barely scuffed and she was hardly perspiring in the unseasonably warm weather. Two Harvard University students signed affidavits stating they saw Ruiz illegally enter the course just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Ruiz denied the accusations and maintained she had run unnoticed among a pack of male runners. Few people believed her story and she was subsequently disqualified after an investigation. To this day Ruiz has stubbornly refused to return her winner's medal, so Gareau was given a larger medal. Twenty five years later Gareau was ceremoniously allowed to break the tape--a thrill that Ruiz deprived her from experiencing in 1980. Ruiz had qualified to run in Boston by finishing the 1979 New York City Marathon with a decent time, but investigators discovered she had cheated there too. (She left the course after a few hundred yards, took a subway train to an area near the finish line, illegally re-entered the race and finished 26th.) Ruiz promised to prove her innocence by winning the 1980 New York City Marathon. She never showed up.
