Shirley Bassey What a Powerful Voice Here is an outstanding 1998 performance of one of Shirley's signature songs, "Goldfinger" All of her performances are great, but this one is exceptional. At 61, Shirley's pitch and vocal power were right on the mark!! She has sold over 135 million records in her 55 years as a recording artist. In recognition of her career longevity, endurance and a particular admiration from the Royal Family, Bassey was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on Dec 31, 1999 by HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Godless Canadian Coins 1911 Except for one year, all Canadian coins have featured the phrase 'DEI GRA' or 'DEI GRATIA' on the obverse side. The Latin words mean 'by the grace of God' and refer to the reign of the monarch whose likeness appears on the coin. The year 1911 was the lone exception. George V had ascended to the throne in 1910, so 1911 was the first year he was featured on British Empire coinage. Because of an oversight or a misunderstanding (nobody is quite certain), the phrase was omitted from Canadian coins in 1911--much to the outrage of the public. (Some people blame the Liberal goverment's defeat in the federal election that year on the 'godless' coins.) The phrase was restored to Canadian coinage in 1912 and has appeared every year since then.

Winston Churchill Fight Them On The Beaches Speech In June 1940 German forces occupied virtually all of western Europe. France and Belgium were on the verge of total collapse. The British Expeditionary Force had been evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk to fight another day. England stood alone against mighty Nazi Germany. Winston Churchill, who had been British prime minister for just a month, broadcast this famous, defiant oration. Listen as one of the great figures of the 20th century delivers probably his most famous speech of the Second World War era. Churchill's 'fight them on the beaches' speech sets the tone of the war for the entire British Empire.

Yalta Conference 1945 The fate of postwar Europe was decided in 1945 at the Soviet Union resort city of Yalta on the Crimean Sea. With Nazi Germany on the verge of defeat, the leaders of the three major Allied combatant nations met to decide the fate of Germany and eastern Europe. Franklin Roosevelt is visibly ill and weary from the long journey. The British Empire is in decline and Winston Churchill can no longer assert any strength. By default Josef Stalin is given free rein to deal with matters in eastern Europe. The Cold War was about to begin.

When America was Great The 1890's early 1900's the true pinnacle of America as a nation The 1890's and early 1900's - until the advent of WWI was a period of exceptional economic expansion, and innovation, perhaps unbarrelled .today. The American empire of trade was at its zenith, and cities were growing rapidly. While the same decade saw an explosion of immigration to the United States from less economically prosperous lands, it was a period of vast wealth. The railroads, the dominance of the United States in South American markets and the Caribbean meant that industries were doing very well.

The Empire Strikes Back TV trailer 1980 A rare instance of a sequel being as good as or perhaps even better than the original film, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) was the second of the original STAR WARS movies and benefited both from the direction of Irvin Kershner and a screenplay jointly written by Lawrence Kasdan, George Lucas and Leigh Brackett (who wrote such classics as THE BIG SLEEP and RIO BRAVO).
