This Photo of Ruth Etting was taken by Alfred Cheney Johnston, the official photographer of the Ziegfeld Follies and was taken in 1923. Ruth Etting (November 23, 1896 – September 24, 1978) was an American singing star of the 1930s, who had over sixty hit recordings . . . as well as a quite colorful life: In 1937 she fell in love with her pianist, Myrl Alderman, who was consequently shot by her husband, Moe Snyder — but survived. Snyder was jailed for the assault, and Etting divorced him on November 30, 1937. She married Alderman in December 1938, but the scandal effectively ended her career. . . today, she would just be MORE famous . .

Original footage from May 6, 1937 of the German zeppelin Hindenburg bursting into flames and crashing as it was preparing to land at Lakehurst Naval Base in New Jersey. This was the first major disaster captured on film as it happened. Remarkably, most of the people onboard survived. Of the 97 passesngers and crew, only 35 people perished. (One member of the ground crew was killed too.) The cause of the fire has never been determined. The Hindenburg was doomed once the fire started because it used highly flammable hydrogen as a lift gas. It only took 34 seconds for the ship to burn. This catastrophe effectively ended the era of zeppelin travel.

Henry Fonda as a psychopathic bad guy.. No way, you say?... "Once Upon a Time in the West" was Sergio Leone's greatest Western, although Clint Eastwood's three films remain among my favorites. Leone had hoped to have Eastwood in this film as "Harmonica", but they were unable to work things out. As it is, I think having Charles Bronson in the role was more effective. It was central to Eastwood's persona in those three films that he be both a man with no name and with no past, but Bronson's character of Harmonica was entirely driven by the past and his need for revenge. He was brilliant, and his tiny, piercing blue eyes lent an eerie intensity to many of his screen moments. The casting of the equally blue-eyed Henry Fonda as a sadistic villain was a stroke of genius, and he managed to produce one of his most memorable roles. This was an incredible movie, and by far, one of the most thoughtful, unique Westerns ever made. The ending is the finest of his many westerns, as well as one of the most surprising. It easily goes on any list of the greatest westerns in the history of film.

My continuing quest to bring you versions of popular songs that you might not have heard. This is Israel Kamakawiwo Ole singing a bared down to the bones interpretation which I think is so effective.

After co-starring in Charlie Chaplin's film The Kid (1921), Jackie Coogan was one of America's first major child stars. Unfortunately, because there was no precedent for a child actor earning thousands of dollars, there were no laws to protect Coogan's financial interests. At the time, minors had absolutely no legal claims to their earnings--every penny belonged to one's parents. Coogan found this out the hard way, when, at age 21 in 1935, he discovered his earnings were almost all gone. Coogan was then put in the awkward position of having to sue his mother and his former agent to recover a small portion of wht he had earned. In response, Congress passed the Coogan Law to protect future child actors' earnings. Unfortunately, the original law contained too many loopholes, renedering it virtually ineffective. Revised versions over the years have been far more effective in protecting the earnings of minors.
