The classy and lovable Jimmy Durante was a very unsuccessful mystery guest on this January 1965 edition of What's My Line. His voice was just too recognizable! (Despite the reference to Durante's age, he would outlive three of the four panelists on this show.)

Here is an outstanding 1998 performance of one of Shirley's signature songs, "Goldfinger" All of her performances are great, but this one is exceptional. At 61, Shirley's pitch and vocal power were right on the mark!! She has sold over 135 million records in her 55 years as a recording artist. In recognition of her career longevity, endurance and a particular admiration from the Royal Family, Bassey was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on Dec 31, 1999 by HM Queen Elizabeth II.

u can see where that urban legand might have gotten started . .(as u'll see from the brief footage) . . according to the A&E Network "Biography", after completing a dance number, Carmen unknowingly suffered a mild heart attack, and nearly collapsed. Durante was at her side, and helped keep her on her feet. She laughed "I'm all out of breath" and Durante replied "Dat's OK, honey, I'll take yer lines!" Carmen laughed again, quickly pulled herself together and finished the show. At the end of the broadcast, she danced out the door, turned to the audience, blew a big kiss, and was gone. "The Brazilian Bombshell" died by the following morning, at the age of 46. The official cause of death given on her death certificate was from untreated toxemia (later known as pre-eclampsia), and heart failure stemming from a pregnancy. . .

November 25, 1980 saw one of the strangest occurrences in boxing history: Roberto Duran quit during the eighth round of his world welterweight title defense versus Sugar Ray Leonard. The surrender was all the more strange because of Duran's macho reputation.

One of the most convincing knockouts you'll see: From July 15, 1984, Thomas Hearns flattens Roberto Duran in just two rounds.

Classico referred to this fight in his comments about my Hearns-Duran post. This is Thomas Hearns defeating Pipino Cuevas in just two rounds on August 2, 1980 in Detroit to win the WBA version of the world welterweight championship. Why Pipino Cuevas, a long-reigning champion, was defending his title in Hearns' hometown is a mystery to me.
