Another Blast From The Past PJ PROBY PJ Proby was born James Marcus Smith in Houston TX, 11/06/38. I don't know what show this was from, but "Hold Me" was a big hit for Proby in 1964. There's a story about him that goes something like this: PJ was known for his exhausting visional stage performances. It was one of these performances on January 29, 1965, at Fairfield Hall, Croydon in London that Proby, who was the first male ever to wear his hair in a pony tail in the last century at least, burst out of his skin tight velvet bell-bottoms doing his act, based on the black shows he had been used to attending in the rougher areas of Downtown LA. He explained to the frantic press that the ripped clothing was an accident due to the weak velvet material, but when two days later the same thing again happened, the audiences were wild with excitement, as they had never witnessed such body movement onstage or such provocative mood and they loved him. However, the British system that governs the music scene was less enthusiastic. PJ was banned from all theaters in Great Britain and not allowed to perform his recordings on the B.B.C. or A.T.V. television stations. By February 24th, Proby was unable to perform almost anywhere although he was headline news in every newspaper.

Actor Heath Ledger Dies at 28 Heath Ledger was found dead today, Jan 22, 2008, at a downtown Manhattan residence in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there found him dead at 3:26 p.m. The Australian-born actor was an Oscar nominee for his role in "Brokeback Mountain" and has numerous other screen credits. Very, very sad.

Grand River Flood 1974 My hometown, Cambridge, Ontario, was blasted on May 17, 1974 when the banks of the Grand River overflowed. This is a photo of the downtown area taken around noon that day.

Mary Tyler Moore Statue In May 2002, actress Mary Tyler Moore was present as cable TV network TV Land dedicated a statue in downtown Minneapolis to the television character she made famous in the sitcom that bears her name. The bronze statue is located in front of the Macy's department store, near the corner of 7th Street and Nicollet Mall. (It was a Dayton's Department Store at the time of the dedication.) The statue depicts the iconic moment in the show's opening credits where Mary gleefully tosses her tam o'shanter into the air in a freeze-frame at the end of the montage. The message on the statue asks, 'Who can turn the world on with her smile?' Mary, of course!

1900 Automobile Parade This may be the first annual automobile parade, held on February 6, 1900, in downtown Manhattan. At least ten different makes and models are seen, including electric and steam powered machines.
