The original classic Sunday night version of What's My Line ended its run of more than 17 years on September 3, 1967. Everyone figured the final mystery guest would be a biggie. Some newspapers even speculated it would be President Lyndon Johnson. (Hence, Arlene Francis' question about being 'elected into office.') Instead host John Daly was himself the mystery guest! Quite a fitting conclusion, I'd say!

Glamorous Lauren Bacall appeared as a mystery challenger on What's My Line in 1953. (I believe host John Daly enjoyed the conferences!)

From 1961, Harpo Marx is interviewed (sort of ) by Jon Daly on The Today Show. Harpo's autobiography, Harpo Speaks, had just been released.

Oh, that sneaky What's My Line host John Daly! The first challenger on the November 6, 1955 episode was his secretary! (Note how he deliberately mispronounces her last name twice to try to confuse the panel.)

There were more than 900 episodes of the Sunday night CBS version of What's My Line made between 1950 and 1967. Host John Daly only missed four of them. Here's one of the four: Julie London is the mystery challenger as regular panelist Bennett Cerf pinch hits for the vacationing John Daly on September 29, 1957.

Steve asked me to try this, so here goes. Let's pretend I'm John Daly, the distinguished host of What's My Line. All of you are the panelists. You are blindfolded as the mystery guest (who exists in my mind) enters the studio. The crowd cheers as he/she signs in and takes a seat next to Mr. Daly. Your task is to identify the mystery challenger from scratch. In the tradition of WML, you will ask questions that can only be answered yes or no. Of course the mystery guest is a famous person. The one quirk is that he/she may be deceased. Good luck! May we have the first question, please.

Here's a What's My Line rarity from 1954: Actor Van Johnson signs in as the mystery challenger--and host John Daly terminates the game before it even starts! Daly explains there had been a security leak: Johnson's forthcoming mystery guest appearance was publicized in both Variety and in Walter Winchell's syndicated column. This was the only time such an occurrence happened in nearly 900 WML programs.
