The 1935 Pittsburgh Crawfords, champions of the Negro National League, are considered one of the greatest baseball teams ever assembled. Five Hall-of-Famers played on that club: Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Judy Johnson, Cool Papa Bell, and Oscar Charleston. Nodody can say for certain how the Crawfords would have fared against major league teams, but it's safe to assume they were better than the Pittsburgh Pirates that year. The Pirates were a fourth-place club in 1935.

Canadians don't generally win a lot of gold medals at the Olympics. When we do, it's cause for celebration. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Canada's Chandra Crawford won a gold medal in cross-country skiing. She further endeared herself to the country with her gleeful singing of O Canada on the medal podium.

The cast included a series of top names: Greta Garbo, Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Lewis Stone and Jean Hersholt; and, the film opens and closes with Lewis Stone's totally unaware statement: "Grand Hotel. People come and go. Nothing ever happens". The comment turns out to be ironic during the few days in which the plot unfolds, because everything seems to be happening at the hotel, from romance to robbery to an accidental death...
