Soap Box Racing Now here's a real childhood memory for me. Locally we called these Bogies or carts, which was a bit confusing as this could also mean something else. A set of old pram wheels a couple of planks of wood, a bit of rope and of coarse a soap box or a crate of some kind. You then had the makings of some great fun and a quick way to accept pain. Tell the kids of today about this and you get that well practised blank expression.

Sonny and Cher In Their Glory Salvatore Sonny Bono started out in Los Angeles at Specialty Records as a songwriter in the late 1950s. In 1963, while working on sessions with Phil Spector, he met a 16 year old, would be singer named Cherilyn Sarkasian Lapierre at a coffee shop next to a Los Angeles radio station. She had previously recorded Ringo, I Love You, produced by Phil Spector, under the name Bonnie Jo Mason. Although Sonny was married to Donna Rankin, with whom he had a daughter, his interest in Cher grew until he eventually ended his marriage. Sonny and Cher were later married and although she was reluctant, the pair formed a professional duo, initially known as Caesar and Cleo. For a time, from 1965 until 1967, they were rock and roll's hottest couple, so much so that in some conservative communities they were considered almost morally subversive. Parents locked up their kids when Sonny and Cher were passing through for a concert appearance. Then, as quickly as they started, the hits stopped coming. Later, they ended up with a summer replacement try-out show that did so well that Sonny and Cher were given a regular spot in the CBS lineup in January 1972, with a comedy-variety series. Their recording career was revived initially by a live album, cut in one night in Las Vegas, featuring new versions of their early hits as well as parts of their current repertory. The album went gold. The next couple of singles by Cher, and Sonny and Cher failed, but producer Snuff Garrett, who had been at Liberty when Cher was there, but had never worked with her, was brought in, and the result was Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, a number one hit that revived their career. After that, The Way of Love, All I Ever Need Is You, A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done, Half Breed, and Dark Lady kept either Cher or the couple in the Top Ten at various times through 1974. By then, however, their marriage had fallen apart, and with it, the success of their TV show.

Dustys Trail Theme Song From the movie "The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West"(1976) ...which simply strung together three episodes of the not very popular "Gilligan's Island" remake "Dusty's Trail" (1973) Here's how it goes: Produced by Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of Gilligan's Island, this series took the character of Gilligan, changed his name to Dusty, placed him on a wagon train and dared him to try to find the west! They surrounded Dusty with very recognizable characters - The wagon master played by Forrest Tucker (Skipper); a rich couple, Ivor Francis and Lynn Wood (Mr. & Mrs. Howell); saloon girl Jeannine Riley (Ginger); school marm Lori Saunders (Mary Ann); and an engineer played by Bud Cort (Professor). With Dusty as guide, the wagon train wandered all over the place, and it was a sure bet that this group would never make its way west, in much the same way the castaways were never able to get off the island thanks to the lovable, well-meaning Gilligan...Starring: Bob Denver - Dusty, Forrest Tucker - Wagonmaster Callahan, also Co-starring: Ivor Francis - Mr. Carson Brookhaven, Lynn Wood - Mrs. Brookhaven, Jeannine Riley - Lulu McQueen, Lori Saunders - Betsy, Bill Cort - Andy

We Will Miss You Brett Somers WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) Actress and comedian Brett Somers, who amused game show fans with her quips on the "Match Game" in the 1970s, has died, her son said. She was 83. Somers died Saturday at her home in Westport of stomach and colon cancer, Adam Klugman said Monday. Hosted by Gene Rayburn, "Match Game" was the top game show during much of the 1970s. Contestants would try to match answers to nonsense questions with a panel of celebrities; much of the humor came from the racy quips and putdowns. Shows from the 1973-79 run, featuring regulars like Somers, Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Reilly, are still seen on cable TV's GSN (formerly Game Show Network.) Somers married actor Jack Klugman, the future star of the television shows "Quincy" and "The Odd Couple," in 1953. The two separated in 1974, but never divorced.

Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd For a short time during the early 1940s, Lake was considered one of the most reliable box office draws in Hollywood and was also known for her onscreen pairings with actor Alan Ladd. At first, the couple was teamed together merely out of physical necessity: Alan Ladd was just 5 feet 5 inches tall and the only actress then on the Paramount lot short enough to pair with him was Veronica, who stood just 4 feet 11 inches. They made four films together: THIS GUN FOR HIRE, THE GLASS KEY, THE BLUE DAHLIA, and SAIGON. . i love this black and white photo of them!

Odd Couple opening This was the opening sequence for the final season of The Odd Couple (1974-75) Why this funny show isn't more widely shown in reruns is a mystery to me.

Gene Gene The Dancing Machine Eugene Patton, better known as Gene Gene The Dancing Machine, was a regular non-competing act on The Gong Show. Patton was an NBC stagehand. According to host Chuck Barris, Patton often danced backstage to the music of other acts. Barris thought Patton's style of dancing was amusing, so he persuaded Patton to dance on a show that was otherwise going to run a couple of minutes short. Strutting his stuff to a blended version of two Count Basie songs (Jumpin' at the Woodside and Two O'Clock Jump), the public reaction was favorable and Gene became a semi-regular. This clip shows an early appearance of Gene Gene the Dancing Machine because soon afterwards it became part of the shtick for Patton's fellow stagehands to litter the stage with an assortment of bizarre random objects: inflatable toys, sports equipment, clothing, furniture, mannequins, etc. (It was the 1970s. You had to be there.)
