Howard Cosell picks Foreman to beat Ali Like most boxing fans, Howard Cosell figured 32-year-old Muhammad Ali had no chance to regain the world heavyweight title whe he stepped into the ring to face 25-year-old George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. (Ali won by an eighth-round knockout.) In 1964 Cosell picked Sonny Liston to beat Ali (then Cassius Clay) in one round. Clay won the title that night when Liston failed to come out for the seventh round.

Howard Cosell SI Cover Renowned broadcaster Howard Cosell graced the cover of this August 8, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated. Cosell was already a bit of a has-been by then. Cosell had sworn off pro boxing in 1982. By the end of 1983 he would leave ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasting team too. The 1984 Summer Olympics would be Cosell's broadcasting swansong. He left a legacy of excellence and honesty. You either loved Cosell or hated him. He was regularly voted the most popular sports broadcaster in America--and he was regularly voted the most hated sports broadcaster in America.
