Like most boxing fans, Howard Cosell figured 32-year-old Muhammad Ali had no chance to regain the world heavyweight title whe he stepped into the ring to face 25-year-old George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. (Ali won by an eighth-round knockout.) In 1964 Cosell picked Sonny Liston to beat Ali (then Cassius Clay) in one round. Clay won the title that night when Liston failed to come out for the seventh round.

On January 22, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, 24-year-old George Foreman destroyed reigning titlist Joe Frazier--knocking him down six times in less than two rounds--to win the world heavyweight championship. It was one of boxing's most decisive title-winning efforts ever. Listen to Howard Cosell's famous call: Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!

One of the most memorable moments on ABC's Monday Football broadcasts had nothing at all to do with football. It was Howard Cosell interrupting the commentary of the Patriots-Dolphins game in Miami to announce John Lennon's murder on December 8, 1980.

Here are the final two rounds of Larry Holmes' one-sided heavyweight title defense against Randall (Tex) Cobb in Houston in 1982. The fight was notorious for Howard Cosell's negative, anti-boxing commentary. Cosell never worked another bout.

Renowned broadcaster Howard Cosell graced the cover of this August 8, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated. Cosell was already a bit of a has-been by then. Cosell had sworn off pro boxing in 1982. By the end of 1983 he would leave ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasting team too. The 1984 Summer Olympics would be Cosell's broadcasting swansong. He left a legacy of excellence and honesty. You either loved Cosell or hated him. He was regularly voted the most popular sports broadcaster in America--and he was regularly voted the most hated sports broadcaster in America.

Here's a montage of video moments featuring the unique interaction between Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali. (It was done in 1992 to celebrate Ali's 50th birthday, but the clips span several decades; I listed it in the 1970s because that's when I best remember watching Cosell interview Ali.) The ending is surprisingly touching.
