Inventing Late Night TV This clip shows the start of late night television. Starting with Broadway Open House, hosted by Morey Amsterdam and Jerry Lester, with the blonde bombshell Dagmar in 1950, late night programming began. In 1954 the Tonight Show debuted with comedian Steve Allen, and then in 1957 the witty Jack Paar took over. Classic comedy clips include Zsa Zsa Gabor, Shirley MacLaine, Johnathan Winters, and Charley Weaver (Cliff Arquette).

The Twelve Chairs Gorgeous Frank Langella (from Dracula 1979) starred in one of Mel Brooks earlier films. The story goes something like this: An aging ex-nobleman of the Czarist regime has finally adjusted to life under the commissars in Russia. He and the local priest find that the family jewels were hidden in a chair, one of a set of twelve, so they return separately to Moscow to find the hidden fortune. We rented this film because it was the only Mel Brooks movie I hadn't seen. Since I'm a rabid Brooks fan I thought, 'Why not see them all?' It was great!!

The Swear Box This sketch is from one of the most popular TV comedy shows in the UK. It ran for almost seventeen years and regularly drew a large audience. The Two Ronnies as it was called starred Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett and in my house was required Saturday night viewing.

Ronald Reagan on Sonny And Cher In 1976, Ronald Reagan, then the governor of California, appeared on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. This wasn't a bad skit--as far as variety shows go.
