From the 1978 Columbo episode 'The Conspirators,' the famous homicide detective's investigation leads him to a bookstore where a tome on erotic art catches his fancy. This was the last NBC-produced episode of Columbo.

Johnny Cash sings 'I Saw The Light' in this 1974 episode of Columbo titled 'Swan Song.' Cash plays a popular gospel singer, Tommy Brown, who is being blackmailed out his his musical earnings by his wife. (The missus caught him doing the horizontal hokey-pokey with one of his teenage backup singers.) Brown solves his problem by getting rid of his wife and the girl in a plane crash that he arranged.

The NBC 60-minute mystery show Mrs. Columbo lasted less than one year. It premiered on February 26, 1979 and last aired on December 6, 1979. It has a special place in TV history for having four different titles! It went from Mrs. Columbo to Kate Columbo to Kate The Detective and finally Kate Loves A Mystery. The premise was that Kate (played by Kate Mulgrew) was supposed to be the wife of Peter Falk's famed Columbo character. In his show, his wife was never seen. In Kate's show, he was never seen. Regardless of the premise or the title changes, the show failed to attract a following. Maybe a better title might have been 'Viewers Hate Kate.'

My favorite episode from the glory years of Columbo is 'Try And Catch Me' from 1977. In it Ruth Gordon plays a famous mystery writer named Abigail Mitchell. Mitchell kills the ne'er-do-well husband of her late beloved niece because she thinks he killed his wife. (Got it?) This scene is especially appealing to me because Columbo outlines why he likes his job--and hints that he knows that Abigail Mitchell is a murderess.

You know, sir, it's a funny thing. All my life I kept running into smart people. I don't mean smart like you or the rest of the people in this house. You know what I mean. In school, there were a lot of smarter kids. And when I first joined the force, they had some very clever people there. And I could tell right away that it wouldn't be easy to make detective as long as they were around. But I figured, if I worked harder than they did, put in more time, read the books, kept my eyes open, maybe I could make it happen. And I did. And I really love my work, sir.
