Fargo In 1987, Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman from Minneapolis, Minnesota with financial troubles, hatches a plan to end his financial difficulties. Through his mechanic, a former criminal named Shep Proudfoot, he enlists the service of two hit men, Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) and Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi), at a bar in Fargo, North Dakota to kidnap his wife, Jean, who will be returned unharmed for a payment of $80,000. Jerry's secret plan is to tell his wealthy but antagonistic father-in-law, Wade, that the ransom is $1,000,000 intending to use the large difference to settle unspecified debts he has accrued and to invest in a business venture involving a parking lot...another black comedy that i thought was terrific! I also got a kick out of how much and how often the local police chief, heavily pregnant Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand)and her sweet husband, Norm, ate!!

Country Outlaw David Allen Coe A video montage to David Allen Coes's "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" by Graybeard1952.Country Outlaw David Allen finally gained gained national fame with this song. A hard drinking, drug using fighting redneck who penned some outrageous lyrics. Many Country D.J.'s refused to play his music. This is probably one of the most played songs in Karaoke Bars (at least in Phoenix-plenty of rednecks here!). I found some live perfomances, but sadly, time and too much booze and drugs have taken its toll, and his perfomances stunk, so I found this montage using his recorded version. This is a another song that will get the crowd hopping! Enjoy

Fatty Arbuckle scandal 1921 One of the most tragic figures in movie history was Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle. Arbuckle was among the most popular figures in silent comedy until his career abruptly ended in scandal in 1921. He was accused of sexually assaulting actress Virginia Rappe at a party at a San Francisco hotel on Labor Day. (Rappe died shortly thereafter of a ruptured bladder.) Arbuckle was tried twice for murder; both times the trials resulted in hung juries. Most film history buffs believe Arbuckle was innocent and was the victim of malicious gossip. Nevertheless his career ended because of the adverse publicity. He died a broken man 12 years later at age 46.

Keystone Cops The Keystone Cops were a regular feature in Mack Sennett's silent Keystone comedies. Their heyday was between 1912 and 1917. The ensemble that played the comical police force changed from film to film. (Many were per diem actors who remain unknown to this day.) Ford Sterling usually played the police chief. In this still photo silent screen buffs will recognize Roscoe Arbuckle and Edgar Kennedy.

East German Steroid Swimmers At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, American Shirley Babashoff was supposed to be the female version of Mark Spitz. Babashoff was a threat to win six gold medals. Instead, she won just one gold medal and four silvers. In every race she lost, she lost to an East German. The star of the East German women's swimming team was Kornelia Ender (pictured here). Babashoff was immediately suspicious of the East Germans because of their muscular builds and deep voices. She claimed the dressing room 'sounded like a coed room.' At the time, Babashoff was criticized as a sore loser. The press dubbed her 'Surly Shirley.' After East Germany collapsed in 1989 the truth came out: East German athletes were regularly given steroids via injections to increase their athletic capabilities. Babashoff now campaigns to have the East German medal results nullified.
