Fargo In 1987, Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), a car salesman from Minneapolis, Minnesota with financial troubles, hatches a plan to end his financial difficulties. Through his mechanic, a former criminal named Shep Proudfoot, he enlists the service of two hit men, Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) and Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi), at a bar in Fargo, North Dakota to kidnap his wife, Jean, who will be returned unharmed for a payment of $80,000. Jerry's secret plan is to tell his wealthy but antagonistic father-in-law, Wade, that the ransom is $1,000,000 intending to use the large difference to settle unspecified debts he has accrued and to invest in a business venture involving a parking lot...another black comedy that i thought was terrific! I also got a kick out of how much and how often the local police chief, heavily pregnant Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand)and her sweet husband, Norm, ate!!

Chip n Dale 1951 Anyone who knows me knows that I'm an animal lover, which also applies to my choice of cartoons. My two favorite little guys have always been Chip n Dale, two Chipmunks that just can't stay out of mischief. Here they are from 1951, in Chicken In The Rough.

Actor Brad Renfro Dies at 25 Actor Brad Renfro, whose career began promisingly with a childhood role in 'The Client', but rapidly faded as he struggled with drugs and alcohol, was found dead Tuesday, January 15th, 2008, in his home. He was 25. Paramedics pronounced him dead at 9 a.m., said Craig Harvey, chief investigator for the Los Angeles County coroner's office. The cause of death was not immediately determined, Harvey said, but an autopsy could be conducted as early as Wednesday. Renfro had reportedly been drinking with friends the evening before his death, Harvey said. His lawyer, Richard Kaplan, said he did not know whether the death was connected to any problems with addiction. 'He was working hard on his sobriety,' Kaplan said. 'He was doing well. He was a nice person.' Renfro recently completed a role in "The Informers," a film adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis novel that stars Winona Ryder, Brandon Routh and Billy Bob Thornton. 'Brad was an exceptionally talented young actor and our time spent with him was thoroughly enjoyable,' Marco Weber, president of the film's production house, Senator Entertainment, said in a statement. This clip is from the film 'The Cure', which was released in 1995.

Womens Roller Derby 1952 Here's about five minutes of the New York Chiefs skating against the Jersey Jolters in 1952. Roller derby is another fine, upstanding sport--much like pro wrestling.

Charlie Chaplins Tramp Debut 1914 This short film made in early 1914, Kid Auto Races At Venice, is a significant milestone in cinematic history: It marked the screen debut of Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp character. In this film, made without a script, Chaplin played a mischief-maker who causes trouble for a camera crew trying to film a kiddie car race. (When you think about it, Chaplin isn't behaving much differently than people today who make fools of themselves to get on TV at sports events or wherever TV news crews show up.) By the end of 1914, Chaplin would be the most popular film comedian in the world.

Keystone Cops The Keystone Cops were a regular feature in Mack Sennett's silent Keystone comedies. Their heyday was between 1912 and 1917. The ensemble that played the comical police force changed from film to film. (Many were per diem actors who remain unknown to this day.) Ford Sterling usually played the police chief. In this still photo silent screen buffs will recognize Roscoe Arbuckle and Edgar Kennedy.

Hoover Wagon During the Great Depression, many rural automobile owners could not afford gasoline. These resourceful folks just hitched up their horses to their vehicles. The unusual vehicles were derisively called Hoover Wagons after president Herbert Hoover, who was America's chief executive when the Great Depression began.
