Featured Member - Teresa here is ME in a nutshell . . grew up in a small town in southwest Virginia . .went to the University of VA and got a degree in Psyc . . so, i decided to really use my degree and i managed restaurants for about 30 years: Charley's (not the chain . . Charley Sands, and ex-Pirates catcher opened up 3 in VA in Charlottesville, Roanoke and Richmond,Va . . i managed all three at one time or another. Also managed Applebees and Steak and Ale's throughout the south. Atlanta was favorite location and i lived there for 9 years. Ditched the restaurant business after my 'store' was robbed in Atlanta . .Moved back home to have back surgery (fusion) and met my sweet husband. We had gone to High School together and started talking again when i was walking 10 miles a day to get my back into shape. Taught school in my hometown for a few years (i went and got my Early Childhood Ed degree at GA STATE when i was in my late 30's . .pretty proud of that). Now, i work for my sister who is an attorney and at a national public opinion research firm part time . . gives me the time to look after my Mom who is in her 80's. . no kids, but love them and ALL animals, great and small. And, i adore my family . .WHEW

Inventing Late Night TV This clip shows the start of late night television. Starting with Broadway Open House, hosted by Morey Amsterdam and Jerry Lester, with the blonde bombshell Dagmar in 1950, late night programming began. In 1954 the Tonight Show debuted with comedian Steve Allen, and then in 1957 the witty Jack Paar took over. Classic comedy clips include Zsa Zsa Gabor, Shirley MacLaine, Johnathan Winters, and Charley Weaver (Cliff Arquette).

Dudley Dickerson Like most African-American performers of his generation, comic actor Dudley Dickerson played more than his fair share of Pullman porters, bell-boys, waiters, and shoe-shine boys. But from the late '30s until the mid-'50s, Dickerson was the most prominent black actor working in two-reel comedies. Contracted by Columbia's short subject department, the roly-poly supporting comic brought a refreshing energy to his portrayals of, yes, Pullman porters, shoe-shine boys, and the always demeaning "frightened Negro domestic." Closer in type to Mantan Moreland than Stepin Fetchit, Dickerson was especially good opposite Charley Chase in His Bridal Fright (1940) and the Three Stooges in A-Plumbing We Will Go (1940). Dickerson played a Pullman porter once again in his final film The Alligator People (1959), after which he concentrated on television work. The veteran comic died of cerebral thrombosis.

Charley Chase - Forgotten Comedian One of the overlooked comedy greats from the silent-screen era was Charley Chase. Chase began working in films at age 19 in 1912 and was still amusing audiences well into the sound era. Chase performed in comedies under Mack Sennett at Keystone but he is more famous for his long association with Hal Roach Studios. Chase often played a luckless character who was frequently the victim of unfortunate circumstances. Wrote one film historian, "Charley Chase was always innocent--but he got caught anyway." Often the setup to Chase's film gags was long and complex. Consider this clip from the 1924 film Accidental Accidents. Sadly, Chase died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of 46.
