Skinhead Breaks Geraldo Riveras Nose Before brawls were regular happenings on TV talk show sets, a famous scuffle broke out on Geraldo in 1988. (What do you expect when you have a show about skinheads and their ideological enemies?) The result: one broken nose for host Geraldo Rivera! If it hadn't already begun, the era of sleazy talk shows was now underway. (Loathsome as this incident was, I must admit I experienced a bit of schadenfreude when this donnybrook happened!)

The Smith Family - Forgotten Show The Smith Family was an ABC program that couldn't decide if it wanted to be a comedy or a drama, so it tried to be both. It ran from January 1971 to June 1972. It had two very different openings for its two seasons, as this clip shows. Henry Fonda starred as Chad Smith, a veteran Los Angeles police officer. Janet Blair played his wife Betty. Ron Howard (billed as Ronny Howard) played the oldest son. The first season focused on the light-hearted family aspect of officer Smith's life. When that failed to generate the expected ratings, the emphasis was put on the policing aspect of Smith's life in the second season.

Marilyn Bell Swims Lake Ontario On September 9, 1954, Canadian teenager Marilyn Bell became the first person to swim across Lake Ontario. Some 300,000 onlookers witnessed her arrival near the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto 20 hours and 59 minutes after Bell began her swim in Youngstown, NY. Bell's feat was actually made in defiance of CNE organizers who had offered a $10,000 prize solely to American marathon swimmer Florence Chadwick. (Chadwick abandoned her effort after becoming ill. The CNE did award Bell the cash.) The straight-line distance of the swim was about 32 miles. Bell, who was a month shy of her seventeenth birthday, swam an estimated 40 miles while battling fifteen-foot waves and lamprey eels. Bell later swam both the English Channel and the Strait of Juan de Fuca before retiring from marathon swimming in 1958.

Blue Hawaii 1961 Elvis Presley's most successful film from a financial standpoint was the light comedy Blue Hawaii (1961). The plot revolves around Chad Gates (Elvis) returning to his family home in Hawaii after being discharged from the army. His father wants Chad to work for the family fruit company but Chad prefers to be independent. Shot on location, Blue Hawaii has some gorgeous scenery--including the lovely Joan Blackman who plays Elvis' romantic interest. Songs from the movie include the title track, Can't Help Falling In Love, and the Hawaiian Wedding Song. This film's box office appeal--and the success of its soundtrack--shifted Elvis away from dramatic roles. (His serious roles in both Flaming Star and Charro did not do nearly as well at the box office.) Blue Hawaii strangely features Angela Lansbury as Elvis' mother--even though Lansbury was actually just nine years older than Elvis.

Can You Figure Out Who this Voice Belongs to After beginning his television career in the 1960’s with many a guest spot, along with the occasional film role, this mystery “singer” received his big claim to fame as – technically - the second banana in a (mostly) 1970’s TV series which ran for seven seasons. Now, as to his singing ability….. Wow-! Almost makes one long for the scintillating song stylings of Telly Savalas.

Forgotten Show : Run Joe Run The reference book Total Television describes Run, Joe Run as a cross between Lassie and The Fugitive--which is quite accurate. The premise of this NBC kids' show (which ran on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1976) was that an army German Shepherd named Joe is wrongly accused of attacking his trainer in the K-9 Unit, Sgt. William Corey. Joe flees but is relentlessly pursued by reward-seeking folks who want him to face retribution for the crime he did not commit! While on the lam, Joe would help people in distress. It was one of a scant few live-action Saturday morning shows. During the first season, Arch Whiting played Sgt. Corey who also pursued Joe--to tell him he'd been exonerated. In the second season, the show's focus shifted. A new character was added: a young biker named Josh McCoy (played by Chad States) who became Joe's do-gooding ally. Here are the opening and closing montages from the first season.
