What do you notice about this cover of Sports Illustrated that is highly unusual? It has no caption! Excellent decision by SI's editors. The dramatic story and sheer joy of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team spoke volumes.

This poster of Adolf Hiter, with the caption 'Adolf Hitler is Victory,' was released by the Nazi propagandists late in January 1943--just before the catastrophic German defeat at Stalingrad. It was withdrawn shortly thereafter.

One of my favorite boxers, exciting world featherweight champion Danny (Little Red) Lopez, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on February 12, 1979--29 years ago today. In today's repressive, politically correct society, there's no way SI would run that photo and use that caption. It generated no complaints in 1979, though.

In May 2005, a renowned British hoaxer, known only as Banksy, placed this alleged piece of 'cave art'--showing a prehistoric man with a shopping cart--in the British Museum in London. Titled 'Early Man Goes To Market,' the piece hung on a wall for three days before anyone questioned its authenticity. Banksy, who has pranked museums around the world, even provided a caption under his masterpiece: 'This finely preserved example of primative art dates from the post-Catatonic era...' How did no one spot such an obvious hoax for three days? Said a chagrined museum representative, 'It looked very much in keeping with the other exhibits.'

This is an excellent, emotion-grabbing commercial from Germany. It uses the clip of Paul Potts' 2007 audition for Britain's Got Talent to advertise a cellphone company. The translations of the final captions say, 'Life gives us extraordinary moments. The beauty is that we can share them.'

One of my favorite sports photos. It was taken at Boston's Huntington Avenue Base Ball Grounds sometime during the 1903 World Series. Some captions claim it was taken before the first game. Other captions claim it was taken after the seventh game. Notice the fans standing behind ropes in the outfield. This was a common practise in those days to squeeze more paying customers into sold out games. Special ground rules had to be made to deal with batted balls that flew or rolled into the crowd.
