We Missed Allan Melvin Passing aka Sam The Butcher Some how we missed Allan Melvin's passing back in January. A character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84. Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years. The jowly, jovial Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on "All in the Family," and Sgt. Bilko's right-hand man Cpl. Henshaw on the "Phil Silvers Show." But his place in pop culture will be fixed as butcher and bowler Sam Franklin, the love interest of Brady family maid Alice Nelson, who was played by Ann B. Davis. Melvin played the role from 1970 to 1973. Born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1923, Melvin grew up in New York and attended Columbia University. He was appearing on Broadway in "Stalag 17" when he began his decades-long television career with "The Phil Silvers Show," playing a role his wife said was always his favorite. "He was proudest of that show," Amalia Melvin said. "I think the camaraderie of all those guys made it such a pleasant way to work. They were so relaxed." He saw steady employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name. His other credits include several guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gomer Pyle: USMC," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

End of Benito Mussolini One day before Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker, Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini met a more public end. Mussolini and Clara Petacci, his mistress, were caught by communist partisans while trying to flee into Switzerland. On April 29, 1945, the two were shot to death in the small village of Giulino di Mezzegra. Their corpses were then taken to the Piazzale Loreto in Milan and strung up on meat hooks above a gas station. Crowds threw stones at the bodies for several days.

Archie Bunker Alone Archie Bunker's Place was a reasonably successful continuation of All In The Family. Jean Stapleton, who played Archie's wife (Edith), appeared in six episodes before deciding to leave the show. The show's writers dealt with her departure by making Archie a widower. This is the conclusion of a special one-hour episode from December 1980 in which Archie had to deal with Edith's death. Warning: It's a tear-jerker.

Mike Evans Mike Evans was familiar to TV viewers as Lionel Jefferson on both All In the Family and its spinoff, The Jeffersons. Lionel was the first opinionated young black character on televsion. A complex character, Lionel was more amused than annoyed by neighbor Archie Bunker's bigotry, but sensitive about being seen as a representative of the black race by Mike Stivic rather than as an individual. Evans left the Jeffersons after one season to pursue a career as a TV writer. He was replaced by Damon Evans (no relation) for the next four seasons. Mike Evans then reprised the role in later seasons until The Jeffersons was cancelled. When Evans died of throat cancer in 2006, his passing was barely noticed by the media. He was 57 years old.
