In this b&w clip, first broadcast on BBC Panorama on 1st April 1957, a very young Richard Dimbleby revealed the wonderful world of Swiss spaghetti production to millions of deprived and hungry post-war Brits.
(did I hear someone say...do it to me one more time???)-The spaghetti tree is a fictitious tree and the subject of a 3-minute spoof report on the Swiss spaghetti harvest beside Lake Lugano broadcast by the BBC current affairs programme Panorama. -The report was first produced as an April Fools' Day joke in 1957, reporting on the bumper spaghetti harvest in Switzerland, resulting from the mild winter and "virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil." ...

I don't remember this, but after seeing this today, My kids will never forget it or what I gave them to plant on this day 2009! Their very own Spaghetti Tree!!

One of the first major 'ongoing' news stories to be covered live on television was the coal mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada on October 23, 1958. That night 174 miners were trapped 13,000 feet below ground when a 'bump' caused a huge section of the mine to collapse. It was the third major disaster at the mine since 1891. Exactly 100 miners were rescued; some were trapped for five days before being saved. The bodies of the other 74 were all eventually recovered. Because of the heat at that depth, many of the corpses had badly decomposed by the time they were found. The mine never reopened.

In December 1941, Pilot Officer John G. Magee Jr, a 19-year-old American serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England, was killed when his Spitfire collided with another aircraft inside a cloud. Just a few short months before, he composed his immortal sonnet 'High Flight, a copy of which he fortunately mailed to his parents in the U.S. I remember watching this video on our local tv station at sign-off, before they began broadcasting 24/7. To this day, these words still gives me goose-bumps.

from a 1981 Stanley Cup match comes the titles n' classic theme tune for CBC's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA. Generations of hockey fans were instantly invigorated by the opening notes of the theme, up until CBC opted not to pay the requested royalties and go for an entirely new piece of music. Rival network CTV subsequently snapped up the rights to the original theme.

"The Righteous Brothers started their career on Moonglow with two moderate hits: "Little Latin Lupe Lu" and "My Babe" in 1963, as well as two albums. Both songs received airplay, but their first major hit single would be "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" on the Philles label in 1965. Produced by Phil Spector, the record is often cited as one of the peak expressions of Spector's Wall of Sound production techniques. It was one of the most successful pop singles of its time, despite exceeding the standard length for radio play. Indeed, according to BMI, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" remains the most played song in radio history, estimated to have been broadcast more than eight million times. A little known fact is that Spector used Cher (of Sonny & Cher fame) as a backup singer on this and other recordings."
