Budgie in 1971 along came one of my favorite tv series... Budgie. it was written by Keith Waterhouse,an starred Adam Faith as Ronald 'Budgie' Bird - a chirpy cocky cockney, just out of prison, and scraping a living on the edge of the law. Budgie was an eternal failure and every scam, and every attempt to make his fortune landed him further and further into trouble, either with the police, or with his untrustworthy sometime boss, the cynical Charlie Endell, a respectable club owner on the surface, and underworld villain below it.

This title sequence and a few select scenes should bring back great memories of this film. It was an instant success and made a fortune at the boxoffice. One of the few films of that time actually made with no sex or profanity, the cast included Spencer Tracy, Jonathan Winters, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Sid Ceasar, Dick Shawn,Ethel Merman, Milton Berle, Terry Thomas, and many more top comedians of our generation.

Entertainment legend, inventor of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune Merv Griffin passed away today at the age of 82.
Notice Merv's natural interviewing style as he speaks with Buddy Rich and Cathy Rich on his Merv Griffin Show.

Recorded in 1971, and released that year on the album of the same name, the single was a number one hit for four weeks in 1972. The song is in itself a history of rock and roll that starts with the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson, Jr. (The Big Bopper) in a plane crash in 1959, and ends in 1970.

This is a Sony TC-630 reel to reel tape player. I had one of them back in the mid '70s. I bought it so that I could record a two man group that my buddy and I had. He played a 12 string guitar and I played a harmonica and the drums, (not at the same time... I wasn't that coordinated.) For those of you who might have had one of these wonderful machines you'll remember that it had what Sony called "Sound on Sound" capabilities. Simply put, that meant that after you had made a recording you could go back to whatever point you wanted to and record something else on top of what you had just recorded, without erasing your original recording. What I would do is record my friend and I playing a song, with me on my harmonica, usually playing something by John Denver. When we were through I would go back to the beginning of the song and using headphones, listen to what we had just recorded while playing my drums using the Sound on Sound function.
When we would play back the recording it would play everything just as if we had three members in the group! What a great machine this was! It weighed about a zillion pounds, though.
