Jack Johnson Vs Tommy Burns 1908 On December 26, 1908, in Sydney, Australia, Jack Johnson became the first black fighter to win the world heavyweight title. He defeated Canada's Tommy Burns, the reigning champ, in 14 rounds. The clip ends just before the police intervened to halt the one-sided contest. They also shut off the movie cameras to ensure Burns' moment of defeat wouldn't be preserved on film.

Buster Douglas Kayos Mike Tyson On February 11, 1990, Buster Douglas scored perhaps the biggest upset in sports history when he knocked out Mike Tyson in Tokyo to win the world heavyweight championship. Douglas was a 42-1 underdog. I sure wish I had placed a few dollars on Buster!

Charlie Chaplin Boxing Scene Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece, City Lights (1931), included this very comical boxing scene. Charlie tries to win money in a winner-take-all prize fight. (He's trying to pay for an operation to restore the sight of a blind flower girl.)

Rocky Marciano Plane Crash This is a photo of the wreckage of the small private plane in which former world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano (and two others) perished on August 30, 1969. The plane crashed in Newton, Iowa. It was taking Marciano to a birthday party planned in his honor. He died a day short of his 46th birthday.

Archie Moore Vs James J Parker Legendary world light heavyweight champion Archie Moore is seen outclassing his overmatched opponent, Canada's James J. Parker, in this brief clip from 1956. This isn't really a significant boxing match. It's personally interesting to me, though, because the fight took place in Toronto and my grandfather is in the crowd somewhere!

Emile Griffith Vs Benny Paret 1962 The title fight that ended boxing on TV for years: From March 24, 1962, challenger Emile Griffith knocks out a helpless Benny Paret to win the world welterweight championship. Paret, age 25, died of his injuries nine days later. This was the third bout bewteen the two men. They had split their first two encounters. The fight had been quite close going into the fateful 12th round.

Thomas Hearns Vs Pipino Cuevas Classico referred to this fight in his comments about my Hearns-Duran post. This is Thomas Hearns defeating Pipino Cuevas in just two rounds on August 2, 1980 in Detroit to win the WBA version of the world welterweight championship. Why Pipino Cuevas, a long-reigning champion, was defending his title in Hearns' hometown is a mystery to me.
