1903 World Series Scorecard In days gone by, all serious baseball fans used to manually keep a batter-by-batter record of ballgames on scorecards. (Some of us still do, although the custom appears to be dying out.) For the first modern World Series in 1903, the Third Base Saloon in Boston sold their own version to fans heading to the Huntington Avenue Base Ball Grounds to watch the American League champion Boston Pilgrims battle the National League champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Although the 10-cent price of this scorecard seems ridiculously cheap by today's standards, it was double the cost of what scorecards normally sold for at the ballpark during the regular season. However, it was five cents cheaper than the 15-cent pricetag the Pilgrims had affixed to the World Series scorecards sold by their vendors. The Boston Globe editorialized the hometown club was 'squeezing the dear public.'

Hockey Coach Pat Burns Dies Hockey fans were saddened to hear of the passing of renowned coach Pat Burns on November 19, 2010. He died of cancer at the age of 58. Burns was the NHL's coach of the year three times with three different teams: Montreal, Toronto, and Boston. A former policeman, Burns was an old-time task-master. He once took the Montreal Canadiens to the city morgue to view the corpses as a warning about the perils of impaired driving.

1903 World Series Participants This is a rare, excellent quality photo of both the Boston Pilgrims and Pittsburgh Pirates taken before a game during the first modern World Series in 1903. The Pirates are standing at the back. Honus Wagner is standing at the far right. Cy Young is seated sixth from the left. Young struck out Wagner to record the final out of the last game. Boston beat Pittsburgh five games to three in the best-of-nine series.

1916 World Series Mascots The boy masocts of the Boston Red Sox and Brooklyn Robins shake hands prior to a 1916 World Series game at Braves Field in Boston--most likely Game One. In that series, the Red Sox chose to play their home games at Braves Field rather than Fenway Park because of the larger seating capacity in the National League ballpark. (They had done the same thing in 1915.) Boston won the 1916 World Series in five games.

Fred Snodgrass Obituary Below is a 1974 New York Times obituary for baseball player Fred Snodgrass. Snodgrass was the New York Giants' usually sure-handed center fielder. But during the deciding game of the 1912 World Series versus the Boston Red Sox, Snodgrass dropped a routine fly ball that led to a Red Sox comeback victory. Sixty-two years later, that error was still paramount in baseball fans' minds.

1879 Baseball Photo Before a National League game at Messer Park in Providence, RI in the spring of 1879, the defending champion Boston Redcaps pose with the Providence Grays for a group photo. The Grays would take the pennant that season. This is one of the sharpest photographic images from the early years of the NL.

Wayne Maki-Ted Green Incident On September 21, 1969, the Boston Bruins were playing the St. Louis Blues in an NHL pre-season game in Ottawa. Things got very nasty between Boston's Ted Green and St. Louis' Wayne Maki. This photo shows Maki clubbing Green over the head with his stick. Green dropped to the ice and laid in a grotesque position as if he had been poleaxed--which he basically had been. Green needed three brain operations and a steel plate inserted into his skull to save his life. Maki was suspended for most of the 1969-70 season. Green, to no one's surprise, did not return that season. Nevertheless, after Boston won the Stanley Cup, his Bruin teammates voted him a full share of the team's playoff money. Green's name also was inscribed on the Cup. Green returned the following year and played pro hockey until retiring at age 39 in 1979. He always wore a helmet afterward, a rarity at the time for NHLers. Maki became something of a pariah and was dealt to the expansion Vancouver Canucks before the 1970-71 season. Somewhat ironically, Maki was forced to retire in 1972 after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He died in May 1974 at age 29.
