One of my favorite TV detective shows was Ellery Queen, starring Jim Hutton (Timothy's father) as the title character. It only ran for one season on NBC (1975-76) before being axed. This excellent show, set in 1947, invited you to play detective too. It was a real shame when it was cancelled. (The Arts and Entertainment Network carried reruns of this show from 1993 to 1995.)

In what may have been the worst career move in television history, McLean Stevenson left the cast of MASH in 1975 and signed a long term-contract with NBC. MASH lasted until 1983 and is listed among the all-time great series. Stevenson was given roles in five different NBC series, none of which lasted more than a season and a half. Stevenson rued his decision until his death in 1996.

Here's a unique and forgotten game show: The Magnificent Marble Machine! Hosted by Art James, the show ran for 11 months on NBC starting on July 7, 1975. Designed to take advantage of the pinball craze, contestants were paired with celebrity partners to solve word puzzles, which, by some bizarre logic, entitled the winners to play an oversized pinball machine for cash and prizes! If the ball hit a bumper the contestant won a prize. Hey, I liked the show, but I was 11 years old at the time.

Regulars on this website know that I love this old show. (My 300-plus WML posts attest to this!) The original CBS version of What's My Line aired Sunday nights at 10:30 from February 2, 1950 to September 3, 1967. I was just three years old when it went off the air so I never saw WML during its glory days (although I frequently watched the syndicated 1968-75 version). To make up for what I missed, I've been reading everything I can about this great slice of Americana. In the comment section below, I'll be listing some esoteric facts--trivia, if you like--about this supremely classy game show. By the way, this is a publicity photo of the WML gang from 1955.

Some celebrities just aren't cut out to be on games shows. Check out how country musician Buck Owens throws a monkey wrench into a round of Match Game in 1975. (Owens only appeared this one week on Match Game; he was never invited back.)
