Thats My Mama - Failed Sitcom ABC had high hopes for the sitcom That's My Mama when it debuted in the fall of 1974. This clip shows the bland opening credits from the first season. The sitcom was set in a middle-class black section of Washington, D.C. It featured Clifton Davis as Clifton Curtis, a youthful barber who was the proprietor of a shop he inherited from his late father. Theresa Merritt played his widowed mother, Eloise. Slotted on Wednesday nights directly against against NBC's Little House on the Prairie, the sitcom failed to crack the Nielsen top 30 at any time during its first season and was nearly axed. Still thinking it had potential, ABC kept it on for part of a second season. When ratings did not improve, That's My Mama was terminated after its 39th episode aired on December 17, 1975--although a rerun was shown the following week. The sitcom did, however, launch the career of Ted Lange, who played the roll of Clifton's flamboyant friend, Junior. Lange went on to bigger and better things as bartender Isaac Washington on The Love Boat.

Petticoat Junction - Steve and Betty Jo First Kiss In honor of Mike Minor who just passed away at age 75--one of the most surprising and favorite Petticoat Junction moments: Steve Elliott and Betty Jo Bradley's first kiss. In Season #4 Steve (Mike Minor) had been added to the PJ cast as a pilot just mustered out of the Air Force who was working as a crop duster. During one of his flights, the red-blooded American male couldn't help but notice the three shapely Bradley sisters swimming in the Hooterville water tank. He quickly decides to reside at the Shady Rest Hotel where he becomes the romantic interest of eldest Bradley girl Billie Jo. However, by Season #5 youngest sister Betty Jo (Linda Kaye) begins to shed her tomboyish ways and becomes a rather fetching lass. The plot of this episode is that farmhand Eb Dawson (from the cast of Green Acres) becomes smitten with the lovely redhead. Betty Jo has no such feelings towards Eb other than friendship, so she asks Steve to pretend to be her boyfriend to dissuade Eb's romantic advances. Watch the clip to see what happens.

Stanford Indians From 1930 to 1972 Stanford University's varsity sports teams were known as the Indians. (At the 1971 Rose Bowl game, the cheerleaders were dressed in native costumes for the band's halftime show.) However, pressure by native American groups, who claimed the nickname was demeaning and insensitive to their heritage, caused the University to change it to Cardinals in 1975. (The new name had nothing to do with the bird, but rather the cardinal red color of the uniforms.) The move was quite controversial. For the first few years there was annual pressure to reinstate the Indians name and logo. However, in 1975 Stanford's board of governors declared the disavowal of the Indians nickname to be irrevocable. The singular Cardinal nickname was officially adopted in 1990. Still there are some old fans and alumni who pine for the return of the Indian logo and name.

Barbara Colby - Murdered TV Actress Thirty-six-year-old Barbara Colby's acting career was very much on the upswing in the summer of 1975 when her life was cut short for no apparent reason. She had appeared in occasional TV roles in some of the 1970s most prominent shows such as Medical Center, The FBI, Columbo, The Odd Couple, Gunsmoke, MacMillan & Wife and the Mary Tyler Moore Show. By 1975 she had earned a prominent role as the title character's boss in Phyllis (a spinoff of the Mary Tyler Moore Show). Colby's character was Julie Erskine, a proprietor of a San Francisco photography studio where Phyllis was employed. Three episodes of Phyllis had been taped when Colby and fellow acting colleague James Kiernan were gunned down in a seemingly random act of violence on July 24, 1975. Both had just left an acting class when they were fatally shot in a parking lot in Venice, CA. Colby died almost instantly. Kiernan lived long enough to give the police description of two males who had done the shooting, but he succumbed to his wounds shortly thereafter. Robbery was not a motive as nothing was taken from the two victims. The crime has never been solved.
