Van Cliburn - Moscow 1958 A truly historic classical music performance: In 1958, at the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union hosted an international Tchaikovsky compeition for pianists. It was supposed to showcase the superiority of Soviet culture. To the surprise of the hosts, a 23-year-old Texan named Van Cliburn emerged as the superstar of the event. Cliburn mesmerized the crowds, the television audience, and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra with his technical and artistic brilliance. Here is the last four minutes of Cliburn's final performance of the event--Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto. Look at the reaction from the audience and the orchestra members. The applause lasted for about eight minutes. Everyone knew who the outstanding pianist of the competition was! This created quite a dilemma for the organizers: a Soviet citizen was expected to win--not an American. Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev was hastily telephoned to make the final decision. To his credit Khruschev settled the matter quickly and fairly: "Was he the best? Yes? Then give him the prize!" Cliburn became a beloved figure in Russia until his death in 2013.

Happy 63rd Wayne Fontana Remember Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, and their hit song The Game of Love, from 1965? Here's some interesting facts. In 1962, he formed his group Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and got a recording contract. He was still under contract to Fontana Records after parting with The Mindbenders. He continued on alone, using musicians under the name of the Opposition. Sometimes they were billed as the Mindbenders, or just as the Wayne Fontana band. In 2005 he fought off bankruptcy, but was arrested after police were called in by bailiffs who went to his home in Glossop, Derbyshire. It is claimed that gasoline had been poured onto the hood of a car, and set on fire with a bailiff inside. Fontana was remanded in custody on May 25, 2007, in regard to the charge. He appeared at Derby Crown Court dressed as the lady of justice, with a sword, scales, crown, cape and dark glasses, claiming "justice is blind". He dismissed his lawyers. All that being said, you have to admit he's still a talented musician. Here's a clip I put together from The Game of Love taped in 1965, and more recently during a show in 2006. They're still doing concerts, and at 63, Wayne Fontana hasn't lost it yet, at least not his voice!

Featured Member- Stalzz aka Steve --our 3rd Steve! Hi, I am known as Stalzz on your site. I was born in November, 1964 and I'm from Denver Colorado. I love old movies and old music and old TV shows, and I collect a lot of it on DVD and CD. I also collect celebrity autographed memorabilia. I have over 500 items signed by various celebs from movies and TV shows, with a specialty in character actors and actresses. The only genre of autographs I don't collect are sports figures. I don't collect the autographs to sell them, I collect them to keep them. My most favorite ones are from Astronaut John Glenn (personalized to me), actor Edward G. Robinson and comedians George Burns, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. I have been a part time radio broadcaster for 20 years at Denver's public radio jazz station KUVO- www.kuvo.org I'm single, I've never been married, I have no kids but I do have a black cat named Spooky. I really enjoy seeing all the old TV show clips on You Remember That, especially the musical ones and classic TV commercials.

Eric Clapton Tears in Heaven Wow, this has got to be one of his best songs, sad, but beautiful. Clapton wrote this in 1991, after the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a 53rd-story window in his mother's New York City condominium. By all accounts, the death was simply a tragic accident, and Clapton was distraught for months afterwards.

Biograph Girl Florence Lawrence Canadian born Florence Lawrence was America's first big movie star--but no one knew her name. During the first decade of the twentieth century, movie companies did not publicize their actors' names in order to keep their salaries down. Florence Lawrence made dozens of films for D.W. Griffith's Biograph Company and became the studio's most noteworthy star. Nevertheless she remained anonymous. Known to her fans only as 'the Biograph girl,' she was earning just $25 per week. When she left Biograph in 1910 to join the newly formed IMP company, her new studio started a false rumor that she had been killed in a streetcar accident in St. Louis. It then announced that 'the Biograph girl' was Florence Lawrence. She was alive and well and about to star in a new film for IMP. This was likely the first Hollywood publicity stunt. Lawrence appeared in more than 300 films, but her popularity waned almost as quickly as it had grown. By the 1920s she had only uncredited bit roles and was earning $75 per week. The Great Depression ruined her finanacially and she endured three unhappy marriages. In December 1938, a week before 53rd birthday, Lawrence committed suicide by ingesting ant paste.

In Memory of Larry Clackum- Naomis Husband It is with a very heavy heart that I inform everyone that Larry Clackum, Naomiís husband passed away today after suffering a stroke last night. Larry and Naomi have been with YouRememberThat.com since the beginning; but more importantly they became beloved friends to all of us here. Larry and Naomi have been best friends since they were teenagers and were married for 43 years. This Saturday Larry would have celebrated his 63rd birthday. The birthday party is still on to celebrate his life. Larry was a reserved guy which is why we never did a biography on him. He had a genuine heart full of love. It was not surprising when Naomi told me that if anyone, even family members wanted to do anything in his memory to make a donation to a local animal shelter in lieu of flowers. Please include Naomi and family in your prayers for peace and guidance during this difficult time. We will miss you Larry!

In Their Own Words In Their Own Words .. Remembering the Forgotten Theater of World War II The China - Burma - India Theater Throughout the history of the world, in times of peril and aggression, nations have called upon their military forces for defense against their enemies. Our country has been very fortunate for, whenever the men and women who comprise our Army, Navy, air forces and other services have been called upon; they have served their country bravely and faithfully, regardless of where they were sent or what they were asked to do. Many Americans remember their dedicated service and are appreciative of their performances, but, too soon after the danger is over, the services of these veterans fade into oblivion. ó 1st Lt.
