In October 2014, a French publication reported on a remarkable tribute to one of France's fallen soldiers from the First World War. A home in Belabre, a small central French village, contains a young man's bedroom that has remained unchanged since its occupant died in the final year of the Great War. Dragoon officer Hubert Rochereau was killed in Belgium on April 26, 1918. His grieving parents, as a tribute to their late son, left his room exactly as it was the last time he set foot in it. Over the years the house has changed ownership numerous times, but each new owner has kept the promise not to alter the bedroom's appearance that accompanied the original sales agreement made by the Rocherau family--although it is completely unenforceable by law. The room contains several articles of clothing, photographs, books, and other personal effects. The mayor of Belabre hopes the recent publicity surrounding the bedroom will eventually lead to the house being converted into a museum.

Billed as 'the largest non-political election in the world,' from 1970 to 2014, Major League Baseball allowed fans to determine the starters for the annual All-Star Game using punch-out ballots. (The wisdom of such a system is certainly debatable.) Shown here is the 1977 All-Star ballot. During those 45 seasons paper ballots and ballot boxes were available at all MLB and minor league ballparks, at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and often at stores that carried official MLB-endorsed products. There was also a mail-in provision. In March 2015, however, MLB announced the discontinuation of paper ballots. This did not mean that fans could no longer vote; they just had to do it online. In 2015 MLB cited stats that showed far more fans were voting online than by paper ballot since the internet option became available.

On November 15, 2014 the Toronto Maple Leafs were hosting the Nashville Predators at the Air Canada Centre. Whenever an American-based team plays in Toronto, both the US and Canadian anthems are performed. This night, the singer's microphone malfunctioned halfway through the Star-Spangled Banner. No problem! The crowd finished the anthem for her!

Greg Maddux was one of baseball's greatest pitchers. He is undoubtedly worthy of being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. However, when his plaque was unveiled at the 2014 induction ceremony, grammarians gasped at a flagrant error in he inscription. His plaque states Maddux had "less than 1,000 walks" in his illustrious career. Because walks is a plural noun, the plaque should have read "fewer than 1,000 walks..."
