1901 - 20th Century Begins Remember the dispute over when the twenty-first century would begin? Was the correct date January 1, 2000 or January 1, 2001? Guess what? The same illogical dispute over when the twentieth century would begin was underway as the year 1900 approached. "When will the twentieth century start? It will begin on January 1, 1901, of course--not January 1, 1900." This factoid was front page news in the White River Journal of Kent, WA on the first day of 1900. Said the newspaper's editorial, "Throughout Christendom there has been a voluminous, fierce discussion as to when the new century begins -- whether it is this New Years [January 1, 1900] or next. The majority of the people of this country, as represented by publications and speakers, are agreed with the great majority elsewhere that the century does not begin until 1901. It seems plain that this is a logical deduction, for the Christian era started with the year 1, thereby being twelve months ahead on its first New Years. If the era had started with the year 0 then we would properly celebrate the new century this year. To avoid just such complications in the numerals of tickets all railroads start the numbering with 0 instead of with 1."

Dagmar - First Late-Night TV Star Anyone remember Dagmar? Dagmar Lewis (born Virginia Ruth in 1921) was an American actress, model and television personality of the 1950s. As a statuesque, busty blonde, she became the first major female star of television, receiving much press coverage during that decade. After her marriage to Angelo Lewis in 1941, she moved to New York where he was a naval officer. She adopted Jennie Lewis as her stage name (taken from her married name, Virginia Lewis). To keep busy, she became a fashion photographer's model--which got the buxom blonde noticed. Although she had no show business experience, she was cast in a Broadway musical revue, Laffing Room Only. In 1950, Lewis was hired by Jerry Lester as his sidekick for NBC's first late-night TV show: Broadway Open House (195052), the forerunner to The Tonight Show. Lester renamed her Dagmar. Billed as "a girl singer," she was instructed to wear a low-cut gown, sit on a stool, and play the role of a stereotypical dumb blonde. No one remembers her ever singing on the show. With tight sweaters displaying her curvy 5'8" figure (measuring 42"-23"-39"), her dim-bulb character was an immediate success, and the show emerged as a surprise hit for NBC. Dagmar soon attracted much more attention than Lester and showed that she was both bright and quick-witted when she appeared in sketches. Lester enjoyed making occasional jokes about her "hidden talents." Her personal appearances created a sensation, leading to much press coverage and a salary increase from $75 to $1,250 per week. With Dagmar getting all the attention, Lester walked off his own show in May 1951, and Dagmar carried on as the program's sole host. On July 16, 1951, she was featured on the cover of Life Magazine. However, Broadway Open House came to an end one month later. Undaunted, Dagmar became one of the leading personalities of early 1950s live television, doing sketch comedy on Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, The Bob Hope Show, and several other programs. In 1952, she hosted Dagmar's Canteen, a 15-minute program that aired at 12:15 a.m. on Saturday nights. She sang, danced, interviewed servicemen, and performed comedy, but the show was cancelled after just 12 weeks. She died a month before her 80th birthday in 2001.

Hot Dog-Eating Champ Takeru Kobayashi At the prestigious annual Nathan's Hot Dog eating championship in 2001, a skinny, unheralded 23-year-old Japanese contestant named Takeru Kobayashi blew away the field by consuming 50 hot dogs (and buns!) in 12 minutes to double the previous world record. Organizers were so unprepared for Kobayashi's spectacular display of gluttony that they had to resort to hand-written signage to keep track of his astonishing total of devoured dogs. To prove it was no fluke, Kobayashi won the next five Fourth of July Coney Island classics too--with totals of 50, 50.5, 44.5, 53.5 and 53.75 hot dogs respectively. In 2007, despite downing a personal best 63 hot dogs, Kobayashi was upset by American upstart Joey Chestnut. Chestnut also get the better of Kobayashi in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, Kobayashi ran afoul of event organizers when he refused to sign an exclusive contract with Major League Eating, the organization that runs the Coney Island event. Kobayashi was actually arrested as an intruder at the 2010 event when he climbed onstage to congratulate Chestnut on another victory. Kobayashi, nicknamed "The Tsunami" has set several world records in other eating disciplines, such as bratwurst, hamburgers, lobster rolls, and rice balls.

Sally Ride Passes At Age 61 Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel into space, died Monday at the age of 61, the Associated Press reported. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer, according to a statement posted on the website of Sally Ride Science, a science education company she founded in 2001. She had been battling the disease for 17 months. On June 18, 1983, Ride became the first American woman to fly in space when she blasted off on the Challenger as part of the STS-7 crew, according to NASA. She flew her second shuttle mission on October 5, 1984, again aboard the Challenger. That mission, STS-41G, was the first shuttle crew to include two women.

Omg Squeeze It Commercial 1994 Yes its going here in the 90's section due to its Popularity with Kids of the 90's. Omg Squeeze It Commercial 1994 Squeezit was a fruit-flavored soft drink made by General Mills and marketed from the mid-1980s until the middle of 2001. The drink came in a plastic bottle that the drinker had to squeeze in order to extract the beverage from its container, hence the name. While there are no plans to restart production of squeezeits, an online petition to bring about their return has received over 6,000 signatures. http://www.petitiononline.com/ranger/petition.html I sign it, Won't You?

The Famous Slimer Ecto Cooler Commercial 1990s Sorry for the bad video, best I could do till I find a better one. This belongs int he 80's and 90's section, More the 90's why? Cause it was so awesome and sold like crazy. Ecto-Cooler was a product tie-in with the cartoon series The Real Ghostbusters, based on the 1984 live-action film, Ghostbusters. Hi-C struck a deal in 1987 to promote the series by developing a drink. Expected to last only as long as the series, the drink was successful beyond expectations and continued after the series' 1991 cancellation to be produced for more than a decade. The Ecto-Cooler box featured The Real Ghostbusters character Slimer, as did the commercials. Slimer left the box sometime around 1997, but Minute Maid did not discontinue the product until 2001, at which point it was renamed Shoutin' Orange Tangergreen. Slimer was replaced on the packaging by a similar-looking blob of lips. The product was still noted as ecto cool on many store receipts. In 2006, Shoutin' Orange Tangergreen was renamed Crazy Citrus Cooler. In 2007, Crazy Citrus Cooler was discontinued. In 2011, a Chicago Ghostbusters group made a recipe that was said to taste exactly like the original.
