Tom Daschle Ad In light of the controversy surrounding taxes on the limo service that Tom Daschle got for free, this 1986 ad is ironic.

I Remember Elie Weisel Dedicated to another famous Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Elie Wiesel was born at Sighet, Maramures county, Romania On September 30, 1928. He is the author of over 40 books, the best known of which is Night, a memoir that describes his experiences during the Holocaust and his imprisonment in several concentration camps. Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. The Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," noting that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel has delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity. On November 30, 2006 Wiesel received an honorary knighthood in London, England in recognition of his work toward raising Holocaust education in the United Kingdom. Music "Hatikvah", (Israeli National Anthem) performed by Barbra Streisand. I'm thankful to be able to share this with you.

Remembering Anne Murray OK Lava, this one's for you. Anne Murray is a Canadian singer born in Springhill, Nova Scotia, known for her rich alto voice and her choice of songs appealing to listeners over a broad spectrum, including Pop, Country and Adult Contemporary styles. For many, her fame as the representative Canadian singer is rivaled only by Gordon Lightfoot. After the success of "Snowbird" in 1970, Anne had a number of subsequent singles that have charted both pop and country simultaneously. During 1970s and early 1980s, her hits included "Danny's Song" (1972), "He Thinks I Still Care" (1974), "You Needed Me" (1978), "I Just Fall In Love Again," "Shadows in the Moonlight" and "Broken Hearted Me" (all 1979), "Could I Have This Dance" (1980), "Blessed Are the Believers" (1981), and "A Little Good News" (1983). Her hits started to taper off into the mid '80s, and her last top 100 charting pop hit was "Now and Forever (You and Me)" from 1986, it also was her last #1 on the country charts.

Ben E King Stand By Me In 1960, a singer named Ben Nelson left the Drifters after failing to gain a salary increase and what he felt to be a fairer share of the group's royalties. He then assumed the more memorable stage name Ben E. King in preparation for a solo career. Remaining on Atlantic Records, King scored his first solo hit with the stylish, Latin-tinged ballad "Spanish Harlem" (1961). "Stand by Me" was his next recording. Written by King along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, "Stand by Me" was voted one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Stand by Me" and "Spanish Harlem" were named as two of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and were both also given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 1986, Stand By Me was re-issued following its use as the theme music to the movie of the same name. This video was made in the late 80's, with Ben E King and two of the stars of the film, River Phoenix and Will Wheaton.

The Jokers Wild I always liked this game show. The Joker's Wild was a popular program that ran on CBS from 1972 through 1975 and in syndication from 1976 through 1986. It is notable for the return to television of host Jack Barry who left TV after the scandal on his 1950s game show Twenty-One. After Barry died in May 1984 he was replaced as host by Bill Cullen. This clip is from a 1979 show. What a quick game!

Jimmy Swaggart scandal Television evangelists seemed to be in the news for a lot of unholy behavior in the 1980s. In 1988 Jimmy Swaggart got caught with his pants down (literally). Marvin Gorman, another minster, had been exposed by Swaggart in 1986 for having an affair with one of his parishioners. Two years later Gorman got his revenge. Gorman hired a private detective to follow Swaggart. The private eye managed to take incriminating photographs of Swaggart cavorting in a motel with a New Orleans prostitute. Remember Swaggart's tearful confession? Here it is.
