Hot Smoke and Sasafrass - Bubble Puppy Bubble Puppy was a Texan psychedelic rock band formed in 1964 in Austin. The name "Bubble Puppy" was taken from "Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy", a fictitious children's game in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. "Hot Smoke & Sasafrass" was a line lifted from an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Sal Mineo Murder 1976 Sal Mineo had an up-and-down acting career. His chief fame remains from playing opposite James Dean as a 17-year-old in Rebel Without A Cause (1956). By the 1960s Mineo could no longer be cast in youthful roles, and he was deemed wrong for adult lead roles. However, by 1976, Mineo's career had begun to turn around. Playing the role of a gay burglar in a San Francisco run of the stage comedy 'P.S. Your Cat Is Dead,' he received substantial publicity from many positive reviews and moved on to Los Angeles with the play. Arriving home after a rehearsal on February 12, 1976, Mineo was stabbed to death in the alley behind his West Hollywood apartment building. He was stabbed just once, but the blade struck his heart leading to immediate and massive internal bleeding. For years Mineo's murder was unsolved. However, a pizza deliveryman, Lionel Ray Williams, was sentenced to 57 years in prison for killing Mineo and committing 10 robberies in the same vicinity. Although there was considerable confusion relating to what witnesses had seen in the darkness the night Mineo was murdered, it was later revealed that prison guards reportedly overheard Williams admitting to the crime. Williams claimed he had no idea who Mineo was. Williams was paroled in the early 1990s, but was soon jailed again for criminal activity. Many of Mineo's friends believed that Williams was not the murderer, especially since a blond white man was seen running from the incident.

Nature Boy Nat King Cole's 1948 recording of the song was a major hit - "Nature Boy" is a song composed by Eden Ahbez, published in 1947. The song tells a fantasy of a "strange enchanted boy... who wandered very far" only to learn that "the greatest thing... was just to love and be loved in return". Eden Ahbez was american songwriter whose lifestyle in California was INFLUENTIAL on the hippie movement... George Alexander Aberle born in Brooklyn, New York in 1908 - recording artist from the 1940s-1960s This song was written by Eden Ahbez, one of the strangest songwriters of the pre-Hippie era. He was a poet, but more accurately a proto-Hippie, choosing to wear long hair, a full beard and long, white, flowing garments that promoted a Christ-like appearance. He lived in Griffith Park in Los Angeles and ate fruit, vegetables and nuts. THIS "NATURE BOY" (in my words)claimed to have been raised in an orphanage and to have crossed the US on foot 8 times before age 35. He moved to Los Angeles in the '40s, lived on 3 dollars a week Ahbez implored Nat King Cole's manager to look at his manuscript of "Nature Boy." Cole liked the Yiddish melody, and the lyrics and added it to his act. It was well received so Cole decided to record it. One problem: Cole and Capitol Records could not find Ahbez in order to secure the publishing rights. Finally they located Ahbez, camped beneath the first L in the "Hollywood" sign.

Our Gang - Mickey Daniels Mickey Daniels was the original freckle-faced kid in the silent Our Gang comedies. He was among the first children hired for the troupe by Hal Roach in 1922. His roles often had Mickey vying for the attentions of pretty Mary Kornman. After his Our Gang stint ended, Daniels continued acting. He often got movie roles as a newsboy, delivery boy, vendor, or telegram boy. Daniels made two Our Gang appearances as a young adult: He played a truant officer in Fish Hooky (one of the best Our Gang flicks) in 1933. His old flame, Mary Kornman, played the school teacher. He was also one of the returning Our Gang almuni in Reunion in Rhythm (1937). After appearing at several Our Gang cast reunions in the 1950s and 1960s, Daniels seemingly vanished. In 1991 researchers discovered Daniels had died from cirrhosis of the liver in 1970. He succumbed at a fleabag hotel in San Diego frequented by chronic alcoholics. Daniels was 55 at the time of his death. He is buried in an unmarked grave.

Our Gang - Darla Hood Darla Hood was the most famous of the Our Gang girls. Born in Oklahoma in 1931, Darla began auditioning for roles at age three. At age four she joined the Our Gang troupe, debuting in 'Our Gang Follies of 1936.' Darla's Oklahoma twang is noticeable in some of her early films. Darla's stint with the Our Gang series came during its heyday. Her character was both wholesome and coquettish. Alfalfa, Waldo, and Butch all vied for the pretty brunette's affections. She made the transition from the Hal Roach era of Our Gang to the MGM era. Her last Our Gang appearance came at age 11 in 'Benjamin Franklin Jr.' in 1943. Darla became a regular member of The Ken Murray Show during the 1950-51 TV season. She later reprised her Darla role in a spoof on a 1962 episode of The Jack Benny Program. (Jack played Alfalfa.) During the 1960s and 1970s she attended numerous cast reunions where she was a great favorite of young and old fans. In 1979 Darla was busy planning a 1980 Our Gang reunion when she entered the hospital for a minor surgical procedure. She contracted hepatitis and died suddenly. She was just 47 years old.
