Wrote by singing couple Ashford & Simpson, and brought out as a 45 single by The Fifth Dimension in late 1968. This 1969 groovier version of the song has been featured in commercials and films since then. It was covered by Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye in 1970 as well. "California Soul" has continued to be as right-out cool as when it was first released. Ashford & Simpson struck gold with this everpresent song. Even Garfield likes it!

Here is a song that was a hit in 1978 from the 1977 Neil Simon comedy 'The Goodbye Girl'. It reached up to number 15 on the Billboard song chart.
David Gates was originally the lead singer for the group called Bread. They were successful during the early 1970s. Prior to that, Gates had worked in the music industry since the 1960s, including having one of his own songs performed by the Monkees. He has associated himself with Presley, Bobby Darin, and Melissa Manchester in his career. Gates is still apparently recording these days in California.*E*
