1943 Steel US Penny The 1943 silver-colored penny was a special wartime issue made of steel and coated with zinc. During the Second World War copper was badly needed to make shell casings. In response to the wartime demand for copper, pennies that year were made of steel. They are not great rarities, though. These coins are generally worth about 12 to 15 cents apiece in circulated condition, and as much as 50 cents or more if uncirculated.

Badly Timed Nazi Propaganda Poster This poster of Adolf Hiter, with the caption 'Adolf Hitler is Victory,' was released by the Nazi propagandists late in January 1943--just before the catastrophic German defeat at Stalingrad. It was withdrawn shortly thereafter.

Dionne Quintuplets The Great Depression did not produce many happy stories, but the birth of the Dionne quintuplets near remote Callander, Ontario, Canada in 1934 was at least outwardly a feel-good news item of the decade. Five identical girls were born to Elzire Dionne on May 28, 1934. They were attended to by a country doctor, Roy Allan Dafoe. Never before had quintuplets survived infancy. The story turned sour when the quints were made wards of the Ontario government because of the financial straits of the Dionne family and other concerns. The provincial government built Quintland, a tourist attraction where the girls were put on public display for the numerous visitors who travelled the Trans-Canada Highway to northern Ontario to see them. Quintland served as a home for the girls who were cared for by nurses, as well as a museum and viewing area for the tourists. Eventually some three million tourists came to Quintland--as many as 6,000 each day at its peak. (There was no admission charge to see the quints, but the region reaped millions of dollars in revenues from hotels, restaurants, etc.) At one point, the quints were Canada's top tourist attraction, surpassing Niagara Falls. The quints were isolated from the outside world and even from their parents and other siblings. The Dionne parents staged years of legal challenges to regain custody of their estranged daughters. They finally succeeded in 1943. The three surviving quints were awarded a large cash settlement in the late 1990s by the Ontario government. Only two of the girls survive today.

Andrea True Connection More More More Andrea True (born July 26, 1943, Nashville, Tennessee) is a former adult film star who was also a singer during the disco era. During her heyday as a porn actress, True was hired by a real estate business on the Caribbean island of Jamaica to produce a commercial. During her stay, a political crisis gripped the island and no one was allowed to leave with any money. Not wanting to lose her hard-earned money, True asked her friend, record producer Gregg Diamond to travel to the island and produce a track for her, which she would finance locally. Diamond arrived with a composition in hand, to which True added lyrics. The result of their collaboration was the now disco classic "More, More, More". in 1976 ultimately remixed by producer Tom Moulton, More, More, More became a favorite in discos and nightclubs. It ultimately reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and a full album with the same title soon followed. The single also reached the charts in Great Britain (where it peaked at # 5) and Germany (where it peaked at # 9).
