Malden's family informed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences of his death on Wednesday. Malden served as the academy's president from 1989-92. He made his screen debut in the 1940 movie "They Knew What They Wanted," and was praised for his role as Mitch in the 1951 classic "A Streetcar Named Desire." My Wild Irish Rose for all my Irish Friends Mario Lanza (31 January 1921 to 7 October 1959) was an American tenor and Hollywood film star who enjoyed success in the late 1940s and 1950s. His voice was considered by many to rival that of Enrico Caruso, whom Lanza portrayed in the 1951 film "The Great Caruso." Lanza was able to sing all types of music. While his highly emotional style was not always universally praised by critics, he was immensely popular and his many recordings are still prized today.

Firestone Models 1940 "Two women model Firestone's entrée into the world of fashion: undergarments made with Controlastic, an elastic yarn made of rubber ("Our Most Versatile Vegetable Product," said National Geographic in a February 1940 story). The tire company debuted the rubber product, no longer used in today's stretch fabrics, at the 1939-1940 World's Fair with a promise that it would fulfull 'that very much formfitting desire that is paramount today in so much of women's wear.'"

Chaplin Speech The Great Dictator 1940 This is from the The Great Dictator (1940) starring Charlie Chaplin. In this film Chaplin played two roles: One was Adenoid Hynkel, the dictator of Tomania (an obvious parody of Adolf Hitler); the other was a Jewish barber who looked like Hynkel. In this scene the barber takes the place of Hynkel and, instead of making the expected declaration of war, uses the podium to plea for a better world. It's quite a moving speech...

Cliff Richard We Dont Talk Anymore from 1979 Sir Cliff Richard, OBE (born Harry Rodger Webb on 14 October 1940 is an English singer, actor and businessman. With his backing band The Shadows, Richard dominated the British popular music scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before and during the The Beatles' first year in the charts. A conversion to Christianity and subsequent softening of his music led to his having more of a pop than rock image. He never achieved the same impact in the United States despite several chart singles there, but he has remained a popular music, film, and television personality in the UK and he retains a following in other countries. During six decades, Cliff Richard has charted many singles, and holds the record (with Elvis Presley) as the only act to make the UK singles charts in all of its decades (1950s–2000s). According to his website, he has sold more than 250 million records. On the British charts, Richard has had more than 120 singles, albums and EPs make the top 20, more than any other artist.

France Falls to Germany 1940 History's greatest act of tit-for-tat: When the French Army surrendered to Nazi Germany in June 1940 during the Second World War, the Germans forced the French to sign the documents of surrender in Marshal Foch's railroad car--the very place where the Germans had been forced to sign the Armistice on November 11, 1918 that ended the First World War.

Horror Incorporated 1970s Open This aired on KSTP-TV, Channel 5 in Minneapolis/St. Paul in the early 1970s. Every Saturday night at around midnight, they would run all those great horror flicks from the 1930s and 1940s. I loved watching this. Even if the movies stunk, the open and close were great!
