Last Passenger Pigeon 1914 The decline and extinction of the passenger pigeon is one of the saddest chapters in natural history. When Europeans first arrived in North America passenger pigeons thrived in the billions. In 1800 they were so plentiful that a pair could be bought for just two cents. They lived in enormous flocks that sometimes overspread 300 square miles. However, by the mid-1800s, loss of habitat and the demand for a cheap source of meat doomed the passenger pigeon to extinction. The last accepted wild passenger pigeon was spotted in 1900. The last passenger pigeon in captivity, a female named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914.

Would This Make You Stop Drinking or Start Here's a group of obviously disgruntled women. Between 1830 and 1840, most temperance organizations began to argue that the only way to prevent drunkenness was to eliminate the consumption of alcohol. The Temperance Society became the Abstinence Society. The Independent Order of Good Templars, the Sons of Temperance, the Templars of Honor and Temperance, the Anti-Saloon League, the National Prohibition Party and other groups were formed and grew rapidly. With the passage of time, "The temperance societies became more and more extreme in the measures they championed. "He who does not love wine, wife, and song will be a fool his whole life long" a vigorous 1873 assertion of cultural values of German-American immigrantsWhile it began by advocating the temperate or moderate use of alcohol, the movement now insisted that no one should be permitted to drink any alcohol in any quantity. It did so with religious fervor and increasing convictions.

Cliff Richard We Dont Talk Anymore from 1979 Sir Cliff Richard, OBE (born Harry Rodger Webb on 14 October 1940 is an English singer, actor and businessman. With his backing band The Shadows, Richard dominated the British popular music scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before and during the The Beatles' first year in the charts. A conversion to Christianity and subsequent softening of his music led to his having more of a pop than rock image. He never achieved the same impact in the United States despite several chart singles there, but he has remained a popular music, film, and television personality in the UK and he retains a following in other countries. During six decades, Cliff Richard has charted many singles, and holds the record (with Elvis Presley) as the only act to make the UK singles charts in all of its decades (1950s2000s). According to his website, he has sold more than 250 million records. On the British charts, Richard has had more than 120 singles, albums and EPs make the top 20, more than any other artist.

When America was Great The 1890's early 1900's the true pinnacle of America as a nation The 1890's and early 1900's - until the advent of WWI was a period of exceptional economic expansion, and innovation, perhaps unbarrelled .today. The American empire of trade was at its zenith, and cities were growing rapidly. While the same decade saw an explosion of immigration to the United States from less economically prosperous lands, it was a period of vast wealth. The railroads, the dominance of the United States in South American markets and the Caribbean meant that industries were doing very well.

Casey Kasem Passes at age 82 Casey Kasem, the man behind one of the most famous voices on radio and television from the '70s through the 2000s, has died after a long battle with Parkinson's and dementia. He was 82. Kasem was best known as the host of American Top 40, the weekly countdown show that he co-founded in 1970 and hosted from 1970 through 1989. His final years were somewhat tragic. He struggled with the effects of Parkinson's disease, while his second wife, 59-year-old actress Jean Kasem, publicly feuded with his three adult children, including radio personality Kerri Kasem, over visitation rights with their ailing father.
