Tate was also knocked cold by Trevor Berbick in his next fight three months later in Montreal. He was never a serious title contender after that.

Tate became a cocaine addict who often panhandled on the streets of Knoxville. His weight ballooned to 400 pounds. He died in a one-vehicle car accident on April 9, 1998 at the age of 43. The coroner said Tate had likley suffered a stroke while driving, but he had been heavily using cocaine before the crash.

This was a stunner.

I recall watching this bout on television. It was one of four world title fights that night shown live on ABC. (I was in heaven!) Weaver had done zilch for 14 rounds. All Tate had to do was survive one more round and he'd win an easy decision in front of his hometown fans in Knoxville, TN. He'd also likely get lucrative a title unification fight with WBS champion Larry Holmes (who won his fight that night). Instead his career took a nosedive because of that one left hook by Weaver.
