There's an excellent but largely overlooked novel written in the 1940s called The Twenty-One Balloons. It is largely set in Krakatoa just before the explosion. My fifth-grade class read it back in the mid-1970s. It was a really fun book. It discusses a utopian society set on the doomed island. It won the Newberry Medal for best work of fiction designed for young readers.
