1990s / Margaret O Brien Oscar Returned
Here's a story with a happy ending: In 1995, Margaret O'Brien was reunited with a miniature Oscar she had been awarded at age seven as "Best Child Actress of 1944" for her performance in Meet Me in St. Louis. According to O'Brien, the award was stolen by a dishonest housekeeper in 1954 who had taken it to home "to polish it." The housekeeper never returned. Shortly thereafter O'Brien's mother died. Only months later did O'Brien realize her Oscar was missing. By that time the housekeeper had moved without leaving any forwarding address. The Academy gave O'Brien a replacement Oscar, but she never gave up hope of the original statuette resurfacing. In 1995, two movie fans found O'Brien's Oscar at a swap meet and arranged to return it to her. Here's how the story was covered by Entertainment Tonight.
