1970s / Ali-Frazier I - 40th Anniversary
Forty years ago tonight, March 8, 1971, the world came to a standstill: Undefeated world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier defended his crown in Madison Square Garden against former champion Muhammad Ali, also undefeated (having lost the title by a court order, not in the ring). Frazier won the titanic struggle in a 15-round decision. A vicious knockdown of Ali by Frazier's lethal left hook in the final round sealed the victory. In a complex social context, Frazier's victory was seen as a win for the 'establishment' and a defeat for society's non-conformists.
