1970s / Audie Murphy Plane Crash 1971
Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier during the Second World War, died tragically in an airplane crash while commuting to a business meeting. Shortly after noon on May 28, 1971, during Memorial Day weekend, Murphy was killed when his private plane crashed into Brush Mountain, near Catawba, Virginia, 20 miles west of Roanoke. The pilot and four other passengers were also killed. In 1974, a large granite memorial marker was erected near the crash site. Most people believe Murphy was 47 years old when he died, but there is strong evidence that points to his true age being a year younger.
